Hi all,
I take 5 mg Zyprexa, morning and night. This drug keeps things under some control for me, but it causes a lot of sedation. I was wondering if there is a good stimulant that would counteract the sedation and hopefully the dum dum effect I get. I've tried coffee but my tolerance is increasing and if I drink too much I get akathesia. Also, Abilify, effexor, wellbutrin, geodon and TCA's are out. I have drug sensetivities and all of these have caused problems with akathesia.
Are there any good, non habit forming, OTC, natural or script meds I can try to use to counteract the sedation?
TIA

When I took the atypical antipsychotics (including zyprexa), my shrink always said traditional stimulants were a no-no; he believed they would interfere with the dopamine antagonist properties of the drugs and possibly induce a not-so-nice reaction. That said, I took Ritalin (40mgs/daily from a different shrink) while on Seroquel and it did help...however, it helped A LOT MORE when I stopped taking the antipsychotic. I think you might want to look into Provigil if you want to keep the zyprexa.

Thanks for your replies, guys.
I'll talk to my pdoc about Provigil. I wish I could take it all at night, but there is a huge difference in my anxiety and hostility if I don't. I went from depressive fits and panic attacks daily to a relative calm once I started taking it during the day.

Hi sdjeff:
Strattra is a VERY new and fantastic med., .... in my knowledge from reading other poster's experiences. This med. is basically made for 'ADD'/adult, but also works great as for Anti-depressant. Actually, some folks taking Strattra for the depressive side of Bipolar due to good property of AD. I, myself have been thinking about switching to this new type of ADD med., since W.B. sometimes/but 'not'bad makes me 'fragmented' sleep pattern. Always, the replacement in mind is a good idea in case some of the meds. does go some 'wrong' on the road.
