Ativan and crying jags

Posted by waterfall on April 13, 2004, at 10:53:11

I had a really dreadful weekend stress/anxiety/depression-wise. I had been taking .5 mg of Klonipin twice a day for about a week but over the weekend I had to remain really alert as I was driving in a new city with kids in the car and I didn't want to take chances so I dropped the Klonipin and used Ativan instead. On both Sunday and Monday night taking 1 mg of Ativan when I was feeling low and anxious brought on fierce crying jags that lasted over a half hour each. I've never had that with Ativan before, has anyone else? My previous experience with ATivan is that it makes difficult to cry even if you want to, not that it brings on these uncontrollable jags.

Hi Waterfall,

I'm sorry you had such a terrible weekend. It sounds horrible. I've never had an experience like that with Ativan. I take it on an as needed basis on top of 150 mgs of Wellbutrin and 20 mgs of Lexapro.

You mentioned that you were taking .5 mgs of Klonopin twice a day for a week. Is it possible that the crying jags were brought on by withdrawl? If your body got used to getting 1 mg of Klonopin each day, you might have thrown it through a loop by suddenly stopping the dose.

Also, I think Klonopin is a more potent medication than Ativan and 1 mg of Ativan is not equivalent to 1 mg of Klonopin. So it would make sense that you were either going through withdrawl, or the change in your body chemistry was a little too much and brought on the crying jags.

In any case, I hope you are feeling better today. You might want to call your psychiatrist and discuss the problem with him. Best of luck to you.

K.
