Argghh!!
I have chronic ptsd and am on disibility.
Been on 0.5 mg of Ativan for a year, a godsend.
I use the drug for panic or severe anxiety.
Because I don't work and live alone I only take the drug when absolutly needed.
But after a year it just doesn't work the way it did.
I did some research and learned I am on a very low dose.
I understand the addiction part.
But when I asked my pdoc to bump me up to 1 mg he got all freaked out and started yelling at me about how I better not come back in 6 months and ask for more because he WOULD NOT GIVE IT!!Give me a break!
He tried telling me that 1 mg was the maxium amount that anyone could receive and I know that's bs.
Pisses me off that I had to feel guilty to ask for something that has enabled to leave the house.Anyone wishes to comment, please do.

PTSD, or any anxiety disorder for that matter are intensely disabling . I feel for you and If possible you might want to seek out another doc who is more sympathetic towards your needs. I pisses me off too. I challange any doctor to try and live with anxiety disorder. I am sorry but give me a break. It should be mandatory for *some* of these doc's to stand naked in the middle of a very busy intersection during rush hour, in freezing cold conditions, then they might begin to have an inkling of what it is like to live with severe anxiety. So many doc's are 'benzo-phobic' they have been brain washed by the pharmacuetical companies and thier marketing ploys . SSRI'S ARE NOT THE GOLD STANDARD FOR S*IT!
I have said it before and I'll say it again WE NEED MORE EFFECTIVE MEDS FOR THESE CONDITIONS NOT JUST MORE ME TOO TYPE MEDS!! rant over!!

Thanks Snapper for understanding.
I'm stuck with the pdoc for now, only place that accepts my insurance.
I did argue with him which is really not in my nature.
Told him he didn't have a clue what it was like to have a panic attack or be so anxiety ridden you're bouncin off walls or what that little pill means to me.
I'm done with SSRI's.
Gave them all due course over the last 10 years.
The last being lexapro in which I had a manic reaction and found myself on a locked psych ward, first time for that.
Interesting was that the pdoc there did my history and couldn't believe the crappy care I had gotten.
He put me on a hell of a cocktail.
Gabitil, Lamictal, Concerta & Restoril.
When I got out of the hospital I went back to my pdoc and he was furious and told me to stop taking that combo, scared the hell outta me telling me about nasty side effects, damage to the liver, some fatal skin disease.
We agreed on the ativan and now he's being an ass again.
I'm glad I found this place, like to get Dr, Bob's opinion.

Wynterhaven, you do sound pissed. Just like I am about the lack of response of these stupid psych meds. Sorry about the Ins. situation. It is a sad commentary on the lack of quality one can get in the medical system. Especially the managed care plans. It sounds like the pdoc in the hospital may have been more on track than your present one, he may have well been on track in his reasoning in Rx'ing you the med combo he did in the hosp. It may have been helpful for you , too bad your current doc sounds like he's just fresh out of med/psych school (opinion?) and he's not willing to experiment and appropriately weigh the risk/reward/ratio and give you some much needed relief. I wish I knew what to tell you! I guess I can say this , if you have PTSD and associated disorders, bad enough, you might want to consider searching out another doc , even if it does mean puttting out some of your own $$$. I mean c'mon a veteranarian can prescribe a benzo like ativan!! He sounds like he thinks he is doing you a favor!
Some times the wrong treatment can be the worst treatment!! If you really are that Incapacitated....I would def. search out other options. Good Luck

Is it possible to get the psych ward p-doc to consult with your present p-doc? I once had a situation with birth control pills (obviously a different problem!) where my specialist put me on them, then I developed severe migraines. I went to my GP for that, and when he found out about the birth control pills he wigged out, as it not only caused the migraines but put me at high risk for stroke. He called my specialist on the phone and read him the riot act. These doctors were all within my insurance plan, but the intervention of the one doctor helped to straighten my treatment out.
Just a hopeful suggestion.
