Wellbutrin and Light Sensitivity

Posted by KathrynLex on April 7, 2004, at 15:28:36

Hi Guys,

I'm on 150 mgs of Wellbutrin with 20 mgs of Lexapro. I recently started taking Wellbutrin and am experiencing an extreme sensitivity to light. Sunlight really hurts my eyes, indoor lights aren't quite as bad but I still have to squint. It's starting to cause headaches.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does it go away? I just talked to my pharmacist and he said he's never heard of Wellbutrin causing light sensitivity.

Any feedback would be great! Thanks.

K.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about your sight sensitivity. I'm on Wellbutrin ONLY and have not had the bright lights of indoors or outdoors effect me any. I must admit, I did have headaches after about the 5th day of Wellbutrin. Hopefully you'll get answers to your question from someone here. Good Luck...

I have light-colored eyes so I've always been sensitive to bright lights. Although, I did notice that it has become worse with certain ADs. (I'm on only Wellbutrin now but I was on a Lex/Wellbutrin combo for a while.)

I think many pharmacists and docs don't fully understand the SEs of ADs...

I experienced extreme light sensitivity while on Wellbutrin. I think it was related to loss of control of pupil dilation. While this side effect was unpleasant and alarming, it wasn't the reason I discontinued the WB. I expreienced a severe lack of coordination which could have resulted in serious injuries. (I was walking into walls, falling face down on stairs, etc., not to mention the adventures I had while driving). So I discontinued the drug in spite of my doc's claim that these symptoms could not have been related to WB intake.

I believe the drug can have an adverse effect on the autonomic nervous system, which can be checked readily by seeing if your pupils dilate normally in response to changes in light.

Reposted from above. I used Wellbutrin in 2001 for a couple of months and I had extreme light sensitivity. It got to the point where I could not drive at night because of it (oncoming headlights).

It did not get better. I stopped taking Wellbutrin. I was fine again inside a week.

Granted, I was taking a lot of other things as well. Perhaps the Wellbutrin was a catalyst?

Hi Guys,

Thank you. I really appreciate the feedback! I think it's a minor side effect because it seems to be getting better today. (finally!) Everyone had some very useful suggestions/ideas and I will probably discuss them with my pdoc on my next visit. Thanks again.

K.
