Is it like an SSRI and wellbutrin type mix? Can you use it if you have a mood disorder? Is better for depression that SSRI's? SSRIs do nothing for my depression... weight gain?
Thanks

It's like an SSRI with additional abilities to blockade norepineprine reuptake, particularly at higher dosages. The Wellbutrin + SSRI analogy would not be an exact one, as Wellbutrin is very dopaminergic, along with some capability to blockade NE reuptake (Effexor does blockade dopamine reuptake but is very weak at doing this). Some people feel Effexor is a better/more effective choice than SSRIs because it works on norepinephrine also. I suppose I would agree this is true in some cases, but not necessarily always.Effexor always lowered my appetite, but some people gain weight on it. By contrast, Zoloft increased my appetite. It's hard to say how a particular individual will react to these drugs without trying several of them. In my case, I've found that all drugs that work on norepinephrine tend to lower my appetite and make me lose weight, but again, this is certainly not true for everybody.

Hi Todd, I currently take 75mg of EffexorXR plus 150mg of WellbutrinSR. Wellbutrin can act as a "booster" when taken as an adjunct...that seems to be the only thing that has shown ANY response for me in terms of the antidepressants. I've tried something in every class. I also take an anticonvulsant as I am bipolar.
Effexor drastically reduces my appetite. When I went back on it this last time I lost 10 lbs. like that. A good thing because trying this and that over the years has made me put on about 30!
This is the end of the thread.
