My P/doc is considering trying me on Sodium Valproate for my GAD, social phobia, and depression along with my Prozac 20mg.
Has anyone tried Sodium Valproate? Was it any good? What were the side effects from it? Is it good for both depression AND anxiety?
He said I would be on a low dose to start with, but I'm not sure what that dose will be yet.
Thanks, in advance!

I was put on it for supposed bipolar II disorder. From memory the dose was about 2 grams a day in 2 doses. It caused horrible fatty diarrhoea and made be slow and drowsy. Complete was of time.

Hi,
the valproate group of medications are known by a number of brand names. Depakote and Epilim are the most common. If you do a search through the archives you'll find hundreds of posts on vaplroate. This medication helps many, many people including me.
Cheers,
Amy

I am currently taking 1500mg of Sodium Valproate(Depakote) for Bipolar I in addition to Lexapro and Trazodone(for sleep). I am switching to another mood stabilizer(Topamax) tomorrow due to signifigant weight gain. Keep the weight gain in mind. It is definitely a major side effect and very common. A lot of people who take this also have problems with their hair thinning. I had a little bit, but nothing of too much concern since I have thick hair already. Also, The "ER" or extended release seems to have less side effects than the "SR" sustained released formula.
This is the end of the thread.
