SSRIs and drowsiness question

Posted by jms600 on April 3, 2004, at 14:39:48

Does anyone else have excessive drowsiness on the SSRIs?

Whats the strongest OVER-THE-COUNTER stimulant or herb available to increase wakefulness?? I take Caffeine tablets but they don't really help. I don't want to get on the heavy stimulants such as Amphetamines / Ritalin etc. if I can help it.

I've been on a about 4 different SSRIs and each makes me really drowsy, especially Seroxat - that was the worst!

I'm on Prozac at the moment, and even that is making me really drowsy during the day, all I want to do during the day is sleep. So when night comes I'm not tired because I've slept in the day!

I'm going to start taking my 20mg Prozac at night and see if that helps.

Still any suggestions on stimulants would be helpful!

I agree with psychsage that Provigil is a great choice. However, it is not over the counter.

If you want to start with something over the counter, check the "alternatives" part of this board. I looked at it over the weekend and decided to try American Ginseng. This is my third day on it and I am optimistic so far. I read that Siberian and Korean ginsengs are more potent than American, but they can also cause jitteriness. I don't want jitteriness, so I am try American. Make sure it is a "standardized" brand (according to Dr Weil). Weil also said that it takes a month to fully kick in.

I have the same exact problem, I drink too much coffee for one, but then I get excessive daytime drowsiness that I dont like. I have tried caffiene pills which dont really work also, I also have picked up a soda habit as a result of the drowsiness. If you find something that really works, please let me know I am also looking for something
