Lithium/Moclobemide not working for Bipolar

Posted by Canyon on March 27, 2004, at 0:23:09

Hi, I am Bipolar-One. My relatively high doses of lithium (1000mg) and Moclobemide (600mg) do not seem to be fostering stability. I have had two 2+ month-long depressive episodes and possibly one 2+ month-long hypomanic episodes in the last 12 months. I have been on this med combination for about 4 years now with a similar trend each year. Any ideas on better med combiniations? Mental heath care in New Zealand is of the post-catastrophic variety, so I am reaching out. Thanks, Canyon

What matters with lithium is the concentration in the blood, not the dose. What was your concentration the last time it was measured? I tried moclobemide once for depression at 900mg/day. It was absolutely useless. I suspect that's why it's never been approved by the US FDA.

Thanks for that. My measured concentrations have consistantly been in the 0.8 and 1.2 mmol/L range, usually between 0.8-1.0 mmol/L when measured 12 hours out from ingestion. Interesting about Moclobemide. I will look at switching AD.
