which is the best/worst ssri regarding sex ?

Posted by francesco on March 25, 2004, at 15:44:00

This is my first day on Zoloft (25mg). Curious to say I didn't experience any side effect. I was wondering what I have to expect regarding sexual side effect. I'm reading some old post on psychobabble but I can't manage to understand which is the rank of Zoloft in the sex chart of SSRIs. Does anybody know of any research about "the worst and the best" ? Any personal experience ?

I've tried Paxil in the past and it caused (very) delayed orgasm but didn't decrease libido. Celexa was very gentle to my sexuality but did nothing for my problems. I took also Prozac many years ago and I think it decreased my sex drive to a certain extent but at that time I was not aware of the existence of this side-effect therefore I didn't notice it. Anyway, it didn't make sex impossibile.

Thanks for answering

Lexapro hit my sexual abilities with a sledge hammer. I have no drive and no orgasms. Prozac took 2 years to make me not able to achieve orgasms. It felt like I was having a heart attack to try to have one. But in comparing Prozac to Lexapro, Lexapro defiantly is the worst drug for taking away sexual satisfaction.

Prozac has definetly ruined my sex life. We are in the process of switching things around to see if I can live without it. Up until now it has seriously effected my marriage. I started to feel hopeless about resolving this. I will be thrilled if I can get by without an SSRI and the combination of new drugs will be enough!

If you include all serotonin reuptake inhibitors, then clomipramine. If only selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, then paroxetine (which corresponds with it being the most potent SSRI in lab tests).

Bad news. According to a antidepressant comparison chart (dont have link, site from canada) Sertraline (zoloft) has most male sexual dysfunction.

Thanks Teo, very useful link. It seems that one of the mechanism of SSRI sexual dysfunction is the raise of prolactine, which depends on the raise of serotonin. If my understanding is correct every serotoninergic med should cause at least a lessening of sexual desire. Isn't it ?
