i am currently taking 75mgs of effexor 3 times a day. I am fairly new to this medication. I have never been on anything before. I am a 26 year old female. I have checked my blood pressure several times this past week and at different grocery stores and each time my bp was around 140/90, never any lower. The medication has helped so much, but i am now wondering if the meds are making my bp rise. Any suggestions? I do see psy. doc on wed. I also take 1mg of xanax at bedtime. Which by the time i get home from work my face starts to flush real bad and feels incredibly hot. I don't know if it is from xanax, effexor, bp, etc.
thanks
jamie

The Effexor is causing the rise of the blood pressure. Your doctor should have told you that, in my opinion. they should tell you about possible effects.Roland

Effexor is notorious for causing high blood pressure. I agree with Rod, your doc should have warned you.......Best

I am now being titrated off effexor to wellbutrin. As soon as I dropped the effexor dosage the BP returned to normal. If not kept under control could lead to a stroke. Very important.

> jamieThat's too high. You must lower it. Since Effexor is the only AD that has ever worked for me, my doc easily controls my BP with the beta blocker Inderal (propranolol). Your doc might choose a diuretic, or both.
Contact your doc ASAP.

Hey yall,
My first week on E-XR and I'm sitting in church...suddenly I feel my ears and face becoming very "hot". It was the weirdest feeling since I've never had HBP. Yep, I'm sure it's the Effexor.
All the best!

HTN is a potential side effect of Effexor therapy, and is related to the norepi uptake inhibition. As the med is working so well for you, consider taking an anti hypertensive med such as Altace. It has precious few side effects, has virtually no CNS side effects (e.g. depression), is covered by insurance; as an "ACE inhibitor" is being recommended to everyone over 55 as a cardioprotective medication whether they are hypertensive or not.
I realize taking a med to cover the side effects of another med can seem nonsensical, but peace of mind is priceless.

Taking 225 mg Effexor XR, and it definitely causes my bp to be raised, but I've tried different anti-depressants, and only Effexor XR does the trick, so it's worth it. With home monitoring of the blood pressure, and under doctor's supervision trying a lower dose, we found it was definitely the Effexor XR and not stress, caffiene, diet, etc. Stress did definitely affect the blood pressure. Will be starting blood pressure lowering medicine soon, for the benefit of the Effexor XR, it's worth it.

Before ever starting any AD my BP was 150/100. Using Altace my BP went down to 120/80.
At 225mg of Effexor my BP remained 120/80.
At 300mg of Effexor my BP has climbed to 130/90.
At 225mg I could just barely notice NE effects, 300mg is giving me some good NE effects, I can't believe how much easier it is just to get up & walk around.Cheers,
Panda.
