More serotonin = insomnia?

Posted by profiles on March 13, 2004, at 0:08:28

Forgive me if it's a dumb question but: why is insomnia a common SSRIs SE? if they increase serotonin levels and serotonin is a melatonin precursor?
Or is it because SSRIs increase serotonin levels inhibiting reuptake, thus leaving it on the synapse and then less of it becomes melatonin?
Or is it related to the quantities of pineal SNAT & MAO? What really happens during the 2 step conversion of serotonin into melatonin?

I can't sleep tonight :(

Yes more serotonin availablility does mean more melatonin but serotonin at the 2a receptor is what causes the nasty insomnia. Medications that block the 2a receptor attenuate this problem.

I'm a bit vague on all the receptors -- what sort of meds block 2a?

My experience with Serzone (especially after several years' use) was that it usually helped me to sleep but occasionally zapped me awake all night! Important factors seemed to be a) taking it late at night b) already being hyper, c) other meds, e.g. Wellbutrin.

I remember reading another post (a long time ago) describing the late-dosing+already hyper effect.

Has anyone had this with the standard SSRI's?

One of the reasons Serzone is part of my cocktail is that it blocks the serotonin 2a receptors that are activated by Effexor, so I can sleep.
