Lexapro: more that 20mg???

Posted by Simus on March 9, 2004, at 22:34:58

Is anyone on more than 20mg Lexapro? I have been on Lexapro for 4 months, and at 20mg for 3 months, and I am still waiting for relief. I am wondering now, do I try an increase, or switch to something else?

I am currently @30mg, Have seen posts of people taking 40mg, and even one poster who said they were taking 100mg. ~~~8|8

Did you go to 25mg, then to 30mg? Was there a significant improvement? I am leary about upping the dosage because I have never had another AD mess with my hormones like Lexapro. Have you had that problem? Does it get worse with an increased dose? Sorry to be so nosy. Thanks in advance.

Some folks are out there above 20mg/day, but having tried the 20, I'm going back down to 10. I can't say anything good has happened while on 20. I'm "overdriven" and it's wearing me out.

I do take seroquel at night 25-50mg and would like to ween off that stuff too.

Saw the pdoc yesterday and now he things I may be BPII? What the heck? Puhleeeze. My wife is a therapist and deals with BPIIs all week and laughed when she heard that Dx.

Pdoc suggessted ramping down the lex from 20 to 10 (over a couple of weeks), which I will do.
But there's no way I am going to take Depakote.

I've read where there is considerable overlap in the diagnostic criteria b/w GAD and BP2, but I just don't see being BP2. Maybe I am in denial, (wife as well). Not sure what to do.

Aaarrrgh. I've spent a lot of money with this guy so far. We went from "anxiety adjustment disorder" (i suspected GAD) to now BP2. This thing is starting to take on a life of it's own.

Help!

I am doing very well on 30 mg Lexapro along with 150 mg Wellbutrin XL. My doc has no problem with me going up to 40 mg if I ever need to.

I have been on Lex one year in Feb., started at 5mg, went to 10mg at week 5, went to 20mg month 5. In Dec. I felt like it wasn't working, got grouchy and snappy. tried to get appointment w/pdoc but can't get in until late April. I started taking 25mg in Jan. and it didn't help, so I bumped up to 30mg first part of Feb. Problem is I don't have a script, so I had to go spend a pile of money to get extra pills as ins. won't cover until I see pdoc.

The 30mg IS working......and I had no side effects that I noticed.

My dx is PMDD and depression, I thought I was peri-menopausal but doc said no I was still too young (I'm 48).

I have recently developed an enlarged thyriod, don't know if it's Lex or something else. Had a complete physical in Nov. and they said everything was fine.

Hope some of this helps.~~~8|8

Thanks, Mariposa. Yes, your post is very encouraging. I don't think my doctor would mind having me try 30mg. It is worth a try anyway before switching to a completely different drug. I don't look forward to transitioning to yet another drug.

You should get the thyroid thing checked out. My sister and her kids have Hashimoto's Disease and I have picked up some info from her about thyroid testing. The standard tests do not always indicate a problem. I think that one only tests for either T3 or T4. Your doctor has to request additional tests to get the whole story.

Good luck and thanks for the help.

I've been on 25mg for about a month and this is the first dosage with which I've had some relief from anxiety and depression. I'm also taking Geodon, 100mg. However, I have noticed that since I've increased the Lexapro i feel somewhat flat...I'm a photographer and i feel like I have trouble getting inspired as of late. But I'm not sure if this is a side effect from the meds or just some breakthrough depression.

Good luck with your meds!
