Lamictal vs. Lithium (Attn: KATIA)

Posted by Janelle on February 28, 2004, at 22:35:56

I'm starting to think that this weirdo reaction stuff I'm experiencing may NOT be withdrawal from Lamictal but rather too high a concentration of Lithium -- I have been bad about my water consumption, it's gone way down, while on Lithium and I think that the dizziness, constant "electric head", shakiness and almost slightly blurred vision at times is due to an inadequate water-Lithium ratio. I'm on a LOW dose of Lithium (I tested toxic at 900mg/day so I'm only on 600mg/day) but still, I must admit, I'm not flushing it out the way one is supposed to.

Katia - if you read this - you had mentioned in response to my earlier Lamictal thread that you were in a "Lithium enduced stupor" -- what do you mean by this? What were you experiencing and what dose of Lith. were you on?

I agree with you that Lithium increases Lamictal or vice versa (I think it's the latter - my pdoc told me but I forget which way it goes).

I haven't restarted Lamictal yet either, because I still have traces of the rash and my pdoc said my body must be totally rash-free before I start all over again with the Lamictal.

Yep, I am SCARED also!

I'm currently taking 1200mg of lithium a day now. I weigh 235lbs and am 6'6'' so the lithium 1200mg only brings me up to a serum level of .6 meq/l. How long have you been taking the lithium. The effects like shakiness tend to go away with time. I don't blame you for being scared of drugs like this. I had an uncle that died from lithium over dose. It pushed all the potassium out of his body. But he was taking insane amounts of the stuff for Bp1. This stuff works so well for me that I have no plains for quitting. One thing I have noticed is that the lithium lowers my seizure threshold. If I'm taking a supplement like melitonen then I will give me seizures at night when I try to sleep. I wouldn't want to take lithium and another drug that can cause problems like Lamictal at the same time though. That rash thing doesn't sound like fun to me. Have you tried taking an AD with the lithium? I take paxil and it works great with the lithium. Paxil alone only causes me to rapid cycle.
