Depression first or anxiety?

Posted by linnie on February 27, 2004, at 15:05:07

I would like to know what comes first..chicken or egg..no no just kidding...are you depressed first and then get anxiety? Or does anxiety come first and then depression follows.

For me, Anxiety. Depression occurs if my anxiety isn't controlled. I also think, while often comorbid, anxiety states as a stand alone diagnosis is underappreciated and overlooked. There seems to be assumption to always group it with depression - then again, that's just how it was for me.
This post will probably get a redirect.

Sometimes if Dr. Bob is watching closely, he will redirect a thread that doesn't deal directly with meds or questions directed to or about meds.
It may not happen, but he's a little funny about that sometimes. Some of the threads above include basic poll type questions... which are good, too. I was just letting you know this may end up on say, Social.

For me it was depression for nearly 10 years and a sudden death hit close to me and anxiety began. I thought I was having a heart attack, I knew nothing of anxiety/panic disorders. It was a scary thing for me. From what I learned, anything stressful for me throws me back into a depression and the anxiety attacks me. Sometimes I feel I'm a walking heart attack just waiting to happen. Hopefully Lexapro will keep me in check. Life's to short to live in constant fear. Hope all is well.

Panic attacks then a little while later depression.

Panic first, then depression.

Hi Linne,

I really think it depends on the person. But in my case, the anxiety brought on depression.

K,

How are you doing these days with both? I think we spoke before regarding lexapro. Are you still taking it? What dose?

Hi Linne,

I've been taking Lexapro for a little over 2 months now. I increased to 15 mgs about 4 wks ago and it's been wonderful for my anxiety. It's also taken the edge off of my depression, which is nice. How are you doing with your anxiety/depression? Have you taken other meds in the past that have helped?

Other things I have tried are paxil, welbutrin and effesor. For various reasons they did not work. I want to give this a fair chance.
Is there a way to communicate directly with someone from here?

Hi Linnie,

I don't know of any way to communicate with someone from here without using the board.

I know it's frustrating waiting for a med to kick in when what you need is immediate relief from your depression/anxiety. It takes some time, but the good news is that you'll be seeing an improvement any day now.

For me, it took 9 weeks although some people see results as early as week 1 or 2. I hope you have a good experience with Lexapro, it sounds like you've had some trouble finding the right med. Maybe Lex will prove to be the right one.

Hi Ya'll
Well for me, I was depressed because of a stupid birth control pill, then when I got off and felt wonderful. Then a friend died un expectantly and the sadness freaked me out so bad, I was so anxious about becoming depressed, it took me a few days to pull out of it. Then again something brought on sadness and I was so anxious I was shaking from head to foot. I could not pull out of it, which made me depressed. Then came a horrible experience with Zoloft, now on lexapro and doing a bit better. Am going up to 15 mg tomorrow so here's hoping.

Thanks for all your info. I have been on 10mgs of lex for about 5 weeks now. Sometimes I think I am feeling better and sometimes worse. I am trying to give it the full 9 weeks as you suggested. Sometimes the anxiety is terrible and the the stupid thoughts that frighten me especially in the early morning...
I didn't see a pdoc but got this from my gp. I have an appt to see him today and could ask to increase to 15mgs. Maybe I should wait to increase after the 9 weeks.
It seems like I used to have it together but maybe I have always had depression. I just want to feel good again and enjoy life.
It is so good hearing from you.
