Weight gain and Lexapro

Posted by mystic on February 23, 2004, at 22:06:38

Have been taking Lexapro 10mgs for 2 weeks today...Had a weight loss from the depression/anxiety disorder and not wanting to gain the weight I gained on Paxil for 7 years...I gained 45lbs with the Paxil...Anyone experienced a significant weight gain on Lexapro..I realize that this is a fairly new medication and I was told on the Paxil that it didnt cause any weight gain until it had been out a couple years and then it was reported that this was not true...Any information would be appreciated..thank you in advance...mystic

I spoke with a pdoc about 2 years a go who said that he never heard of Paxil causing weight gain. The drug companies play a large role in educating docs about drugs and I guess they sometimes "forget" about some of the potential side effects.

Lexapro seems to generally not cause weight gain, or at least not as often as Paxil.

I've gained weight on Paxil and Lexapro. I was on Pax for 2 months and then I told pdoc that I gained 10lbs. So she switched me to Lex and then I gained more weight. I'm at a lost at this point. I going to ask pdoc for Topamax because I've gained a total of 25lbs withing a 4½ month time frame (ugh). Good Luck & God Bless...

Hi Mystic,

I've been on Lexapro for about 10 weeks now and haven't had any trouble with weight gain. (Knock on wood!) It seems to effect everyone differently. Wait a few months and see if you've noticed any weight gain. If you do, I've heard that a lot of people combine Lexapro with Wellbutrin and that seems to curb your appetite.

K.

I gained a ton of weight on Paxil, then my Psych. told me to try Lexapro, which I do think is a great anti-depressant. However, I was insanely hungry all the time. My appetite was ridiculous. I was constantly stuffing myself with carbs..Although, I truly was "happy", so go figure. I did get off of it though after seeing a disturbing photo of myself.

>Strangely I did not notice any change in appetite with either paxil or lexapro. But with paxil, the weight just arrived one morning and kept going up from there. I told him about it and he said maybe I was eating more an not realizing. Since I have always kept an eye on my weight and exercise, I knew this wasn't true.
Now on lex for over 1 month, there has been no wieght gain and my appetite actually seems less. I am satisfied with less food.
