Trileptal - Anyone get anxiety on it?

Posted by Minnie-Haha on February 19, 2004, at 18:13:49

This is kind of a companion to catmint's "Ativan - Anyone get depressed on it?" post.

I am starting up on Trileptal after a rash on Lamictal. The problem is, I feel it might be making me anxious. (I took Trileptal once before, with an anti-depressant, with mixed results, and ended up taking a drug holiday.)

Anyway, anybody else have this problem (anxiety from Trileptal)?

what else are you taking? I seriously doubt it. Maybe the nausea and dizziness are worrying you, but it should not cause you to be anxious on its own.

I take 1200mg

I am also taking Ativan (0.5mg) -- and I am only up to 150mg of Trileptal! But my system seems to be very sensitive to drugs -- I usually seem to need very small (often less than traditionally therapeutic) doses -- so what might seem small to some is a lot to me.

I take 900mg of Trileptal. Once I increased from 600 to 900 I experienced a weak anxiolytic effect. It works superbly for agitation, though. I never experienced increased anxiety, for sure. In fact, I used to not be able to tolerate Wellbutrin, and now I can, though I can never attribute this directly to the Trileptal; perhaps things are just different upstairs now.

Trileptal - experiences?

What does anxiolytic mean??!

I have been somewhat med free for seven weeks now after being on Depakote, lithium, lamictal. Now I take a small dose of Seroquel and 12gs of fish oil a day. For the first 6 weeks I've been doing great. But I'm feeling like i might be starting to spin out - due to a very stressful move in my life (buying my first house alone).
I have samples of Trileptal here and may want to start them now rather than later - nip it in the bud. I, too, like psychosage?, only need very little to work for me.
Do people find that Tril. is good for depression as well?
Thanks-
Katia

Trileptal hasn't been so good for depression for me. Lamictal seemed to be helping a little, but I had to quit because of rash. I won't take Depakote, cause it makes me gain so much weight!

To answer your q about what ANXIOLYTIC means, I found this at hyperdictionary.com:

Definition: [n] a tranquilizer used to relieve anxiety and reduce tension and irritability
[adj] anxiety relieving

I, too, had the rash with Lam. which is why I went off of it. I don't really want to relive that scare, so maybe onto another AD in conjunction with a MS. Lithium doesn't work well with me - I become a zombie. Depakote worked some, but I had a lot of energy loss in the late afternoon and I don't want to get the PCOS.
Do you use anything else for depression? Are you bipolar?

I am mostly being treated for anxiety right now. (Half-mg Ativan at night.) I have a BP2 DX, and recently OCD, but I'm not sold on either. They were both given at the end of one visit by new doctors (that is, doctors who had never met me before). I wish there wasn't such a push to DX after one visit!

Anyway, nothing else for depression right now. My pdoc was gonna ramp me up on a MS first -- if we can find one I can tolerate.

Can you describe what OCD feels like? I wonder if I'm not that too. I've got a dx of BPII. very real for me.
I'm just so neurotic, I wonder if this is an OCD quality?

And in addition to making me gain weight, I started having "female problems" on Depakote. At the age of 42 -- after a year or two on Depakote -- I started having heavy periods that would go on for weeks -- sometimes months. This after years of being normal and regular. I finally became anemic and had to have surgery. I strongly suspect the Depakote.

Tread lightly sister. I got this DX -- and the original BP2 -- so fast it made my head spin. Have you done some research on the Internet or at the library or bookstore? I don't have ANY of that classic stuff like thinking I have to perform Act A to prevent Event B. I DO get snippets of songs stuck in my head, and I do rhythmic "counting" -- especially when anxious. (For instance, I'll trace a little square pattern on my thigh while I count -- 1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4, 3-2-3-4.)

And this brings up my whole beef with my OCD DX: I went to a new psychologist and wanted to start a several-sessions discussion about what I'd been feeling and what MIGHT be the problem. I even wanted to revisit my BP2 DX, which was given at the end of one session by a doctor who had never met me before. Could ANXIETY be misdiagnosed as a hypomanic state? Anyway, by the end of the session with this other new (to me) doctor, she'd labeled me OCD. When I complained, she said that was just a further indication that I was obsessive, cause I wanted to be sure about my DX! The fact is, I had wanted to look at my anxiety, which had become overwhelming (unusual for me), and discuss the relationship between anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. I wanted to try to understand better what is more likely to cause or contribute to which. Does that make sense?

My biggest "obsession" seems to be wanting to understand things. I worry about what's going on with me lately. I want to understand -- to not just stab at diagnoses and treatments until one SEEMS to be right.

DO SOME RESEARCH ON BP2, ANXIETY AND OCD. Proceed. Proceed, but with great caution and deliberation.

Hi,
You may have gotten the poly cystic ovarian syndrome then (PCOS). It can also cause infertility and I'm 33 w/o kids but want them and don't want to risk it.

Just asking....about your experiences....not dxing you....
I get obsessed too with knowledge - wanting to know more and more and everything...also I became OUTRAGED at things like snoring, dogs barking, people shaking their legs, biting their fingers stuff like this DRIVES ME MAD. I can't even think - I just need to get away from it.
wierd huh?
I wonder if this is OCD?
And does one grow out of it or does it remain for life I wonder?

Have you considered DSI? Sensory Integration Disorder/Dysfunction? For over a year now, we've been trying to figure out developmental oddities about our son, now 10. It's been going on for years, but was less obvious when he was younger and all his peers were immature and goofy. We found out he's gifted and MAYBE has Asperger's Syndrome or ADHD Primarily Inattentive (though we think this last one is NOT right -- that was just one "expert" opinion that doesn't mesh with anything we've read or KNOW about our son, and our friends and family members disagree, too).

Anyway, going through this -- trying to figure out what's "wrong" with our son, to date, it's nothing that's caused him major problems -- I've read a lot of stuff and a lot of it reminds me of me. Especially the "overexcitabilities" of the gifted (Dabrowski's Theory) and the issues of DSI. In a nutshell, all my life, I've been hypersensitive to a number of sensory inputs. The weirdest one I suppose is that I can't stand anything touching my neck and am generally sensitive about how my clothes feel on me (tags, socks, etc.). I am super-sensitive to sunlight, noise, and crowds. Are my problems psychological or neurological? Hmmm...

I've been having trouble posting too.

Wow! wierd. My dad and I BOTH cannot stand anything touching our necks. My mom has had to cut out the neck holes and sew it back many inches from the original. She says we're two peas in a pod. I've inherited strange oddities like this from my Dad - strange little things - that when I find out my own flesh and blood gets annoyed by the very same things it's got to be something that has a name and has HELP. All sensory sensitivities that have almost driven me absolutely stark raving mad - it makes life a living hell. I'm in the process right now of closing on a house and I might pull out of it simply (or not so simply) b/c a yappy little dog lives next door.
Any more info you can give about this would be greatly appreciated!! any meds cure it?

I'm with you on the shirt thing. I am forever on the lookout for scoop-neck tees cause regular crew-neck tees make me crazy. Forget turtlenecks, which I love. :(

A lot of the literature out there on Sensory Integration Dysfunction is geared toward parents of kids with DSI (they used to call it SID, which would get confused with SIDS -- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), but you will find adults with it on some discussion boards. Maybe try some of the Yahoo! groups? Also, there's a book called The Out of Sync Child that talks about DSI. In kids, it's mostly treated with Occupational Therapy, but sometimes meds, too, if there is a "comorbid" neurological or psychological condition.

A lot of gifted kids get diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Asperger's, OCD, BP -- you name it. Stuff that can often be attributed to the asynchronous development of the gifted.

Do some Google searches on "sensory integration dysfunction" and "gifted AND asynchronous" and "Dabrowski" (for stuff on "overexcitabilities").

All I'm saying is ask LOTS of questions when seeking diagnoses, especially, "WHAT ELSE COULD CAUSE THESE SYMPTOMS?" My experience from trying to figure out what's going on with my son (and actually, my own personal experience, trying to figure out my own problems) is that the DX you get depends a LOT on the kind of "expert" you see.

Mark Twain said, "When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

Also consider fybromyalgia? My auntie has it, and my sister thinks she does. It is associated with all kinds of sensitivities. It's one I'm gonna read-up on and maybe talk to my doctor about.
