1st day

Posted by Jay F on February 16, 2004, at 13:30:19

After much indecision i finally started taking effexor today (75mg)I have recently been through a very traumatic break up and could not operate normally due to constant anxiety and had lost all interest in life, i suffered from mild depression prior to this incident but felt i could cope.

I had felt very fatigued and nauseous all day and all of a sudden it was like a light had switched on in my head, the horror of my anxiety was gone and i felt refreshed and energetic, several people have informed that the medication does not start to work for at least two weeks, so what i am wondering is whether it is more likely that i am experiencing some sort of placebo effect or if it is possible for the medication to have such an immediate effect (approximately 7 hours) I Would appreciate your thoughts.....Jay

Good luck to you Jay and hang in there. I'm currently on Lexapro and it took approx. two weeks b/4 I began feeling a bit better. I honestly believe all the different effects meds have on ones body could possibly be our age, sex and/or gender...something to think about!!

Jay - glad your feeling better - who cares why, its unlikely to be the effexor yet, probably a 'placebo-like' effect. Though dont underestimate the power of effexor - despite its awful withdrawl profile, it is still clinically superior to most other AD's out there - just check the clinical sites. Also, people underestimate the power of the mind('placebo effect') in controlling the body - there was one study of cancer patients who were told that with the drug they were trying(it was a clinical trial) there was a strong chance they would lose their hair. Well 75% of the people taking the drug did indeed lose their hair, but the amazing thing was 30-40% of those taking a placebo also lost their hair - just because they THOUGHT they were going to.
Makes you think.
Good luck with the effexor.

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. Whatever it was i was feeling it was quite short lived, reading some of the posts here scares the hell out of me and makes me question what im really doing in terms of the side effects/withdrawal, between a rock and hard place would be the expression....

I had the same response when I was initially put on effexor xr - I call it a "holiday" because after a few days I seemed to slink back down where I had been, but not quite so bad. Perhaps it was the jolt to the brain of a different action from the med. I also quickly developed some uncomfortable side effects but they might also be due to the two other meds I'm on. They are starting to subside. In my situation effexor has been the best medication by far for my BP2.
