Im taking Seroquel 25 mg and I am wondering something because I hear that it causes cataracts and possibly diabetes...and that once you start seroquel you should have eye exams every six months? what kind of eye exams are they? I have never been to the eye doc before and that kind of freaks me out. I HATE taking medicine that might do more harm than good to me...does anyone know if there is any meds out there like seroquel that doesnt have risks of cataracts? Any info would be great. thanks..

I found this info at http://www.rxlist.com a very handy website.

I haven't taken the drug but this paragraph was highlighted in the warnings/precautions area:

Cataracts: The development of cataracts was observed in association with quetiapine treatment in chronic dog studies (see Animal Toxicology). Lens changes have also been observed in patients during long-term SEROQUEL treatment, but a causal relationship to SEROQUEL use has not been established. Nevertheless, the possibility of lenticular changes cannot be excluded at this time. Therefore, examination of the lens by methods adequate to detect cataract formation, such as slit lamp exam or other appropriately sensitive methods, is recommended at initiation of treatment or shortly thereafter, and at 6-month intervals during chronic treatment.

I don't think the eye exam will be a big deal but you might want to get one to establish baseline and get them done as suggested. It sounds like it's likely to up your chloresterol and triglicerides also
so blood work every 6 months might not be a bad idea.
Sorry, I don't know the class of drugs well enough to make a suggestion. Do keep in mind, lawyers write the package inserts and they will list every side effect possible to cover their uh, profits.
Talk to your doc and search the archives here. There is tons of info in the archives.

Good luck.

You know..

Im so glad you said something.

my eyesight has been going down hill since I started taking seroquel 2 weeks ago.

I kept thinking maybe my eyes were just tired (Ive never had to have glasses before)
so Id keep wiping them and lubricating them.

Turns out I need glasses..

but so suddenly?
I dont think Im diabetic..
though I am hypoglycemic..

curious.
