Anyone taking Wellbutrin Zoloft combo,Need input

Posted by theo on February 9, 2004, at 19:58:36

I'm currently taking 300mg of Wellbutrin XL and my doc suggested adding a low dose of Zoloft, 25-50mg for anxiety. I've tried Lexapro and it was not for me. My doc said Zoloft causes less sexual SE's than Paxil. Anyone out there have any input that is or has taken Wellbutrin plus Zoloft?

Yes, I have heard of low dose SSRI's being added to Buproprion. ZOLOFT [sertraline] has a lower incidence of side effects probably because of its lack of anti-muscarinic effects [unlike Paxil] and dopamine level alterations [but at higher doses]. The low dose addition is worth a try. If it doesn't work for you, ask your physician about a beta blocker at low dose i.e. Propranolol 10 mg twice a day.

I stopped taking Lexapro in December and I'm currently on Wellbutrin XL 150. My pdoc added a very low dose of zoloft last week. The only thing I notice is sleep disturbances. I'm hoping that it will begin working in the next few weeks.

Are you taking the Zoloft morning at the same time as your Wellbutrin XL or at bedtime? What dose of Zoloft?

I take them both in the morning. I'm on Zoloft - 25. I was so terrified to take this drug due to potential weight gain that we're going to try to keep the dose low.

My former psychiatrist, who is chief of psychiatry at a prominent NYC hospital, told me he frequently combined Serzone with Wellbutrin for patients with anxious depression. Given that I was completely awed by that guy's expertise, I can only recommend that you try that instead of Zoloft, especially if the depression is under control and you're simply treating anxiety. No sexual side effects there, and probably a better anxiolytic effect.

The first day you took 25mg Zoloft did it make you feel strange? I'm wondering if I should go ahead and start it or wait till the weekend.

What about all of this liver scare from Serzone?

Get a baseline a liver function test done, then some periodic tests. This should all but eliminate the risk of liver damage. I believe that you only need to monitor it during the beginning of treatment, as well, but don't quote me on that. Liver function tests are a small price to pay for a good drug effect.

If this risk really were the scare people were making it out to be, it would either be off the market or its black box warning would look more like Tasmar's. Check that out:

The fact that Serzone's warning doesn't even forbid its use as a first-line therapy is telling.

It really didn't make me feel too bad. For the first two days, it just give me the same heartburn/naseous feeling that lexapro gave me.

Not sure I'll stay on this one too long. I've got a bad feeling that it's giving me sexual SEs.

That's a bummer to hear. Although it varies from person to person, Zoloft is supposed to have the least effect on sexual side effects, that's why I'm trying it. Loved Paxil but it was the worst for sexual SE's. Keep me posted on the sexual SE's of the Zoloft, I'd appreciate it.

Hello, I would be interested to know if your pdocs observation regarding the sexual side effects is anecdotal or factual and could he provide his resources? references? Regards, Micro

i stopped that combo because of non-compliance and not side-effect issues. However, it's a potent and popular one I think because it hits everything. I think it helps a lot of dual diagnosis people.

Hopefully you are not bipolar, and it does not switch you into a mania. Zoloft makes me sleep an extra hour, and that has been consistent the many times I have taken it.

Wellbutrin may counteract any sedating or dulling feelings caused by zoloft. Zoloft often caused vivid dreams and pretty colors for me while awake. The colors last a few days only. Occasional night sweats are the norm. Initial nausea is too. Enjoy!

Theo, Thanks for the article. I will research this in more depth as I have found most people on ssris complain regardless of the particular sssri they take.
This info. was quite interesting! Micro
