The Nardil Shuffle

Posted by mattdds on January 31, 2004, at 19:08:45

Hey all,

Recently, and seemingly out of nowhere, I have developed a weird side effect during my Nardil trial. I call it the "Nardil Shuffle".

I'ts probably not noticible to others, but I feel like I'm staggering when I walk. It seems to be really exaggerated when I'm tired, or just waking up.

Anybody experience this? Does this tend to go away?

I'm at 60 mg / day.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Matt,
I had this as a beginning SE, but it went away. I felt like I was walking like I was drunk, but I wasn't dizzy or anything. I just staggered for no reason.

I thought this was Ortho. hypotension, but maybe it's something different? If it comes back at 60mg for me, I was planning to try to take my BP to check it out. It's weird though.

Hey GG,

I don't believe this is due to orthostatic hypotension, at least in my case. This came to mind, but I ruled it out because I actually took my BP while sitting, then while standing, and it did not change significantly.

It's good to hear this side effect goes away, or that it did for you. I'd hate to go off of it before I gave it a full trial - it seems to be doing some good. I feel more confident and calm now, in general.

Sounds like your trial is going very well?

Best,

Matt

Matt,
Going well. I feel pretty good despite overwhelming pressure from stuff I procrastinated on. Actually starting to work on it and check off tasks. No new SE's, and actually, no staggering at 60 for me--yet. Urinary retention comes and goes (no pun intended), and hyperreflexia continues. But that is just a distraction rather than a concern. It's kind of fun to experiment with when you are REALLY bored. Oop, didn't mean to kick you, it's a SE! :)

Hope your staggering goes away. If I remember correctly, mine only lasted a max. of two weeks.

Ace,

Thanks man. I think even over the last couple of days the ataxia is starting to get better. I don't feel as drunken anymore.

My response so far has been subtle, but definitely noticible. I am starting to notice more and more of the effects, like much better sleep (stopped using my Ambien), reduced startle response.

Another interesting thing. Because of reduced anxiety from the Nardil, I sometimes forget to take my Klonopin. I could not have gotten away with this before. So I experimented a bit, and cut my dose in half (slowly, of course over the last 3 or so weeks). Now I only take a small maintenance dose of Klonopin. I have no intention of ditching Klonopin, and I'm no hurry to get off it, but I find I just don't really need it as much. Just an interesting finding.

Thanks for all your advice during my little adventure. Your experience is very valuable to me and other newbie Nardil-ites on this board.

Matt

That's the word! Drunk! When I first started Nardil when I went up the dose I was fumbling around like a drunk man! Bad cognitive probs too, but it all abated...

Absolutely thrilled for you! The best part is, I think the major AD/euphoric effects are pending!

When Nardils full anxiolytic (sp?) effects kick in, which can take up to 12 weeks, I doubt you will feel the need for any klonopin...

That's great...I try not too get very technical unless somewhat asks me so...because all that would do is prove Im smart (which everyone already knows!) and baffle some other readers. Its great to help this world in any way....

I don't understand what causes this annoying stumbling problem. Could you explain it in more technical terms so I can understand what's going on. Do people ever have a problem with it not going away?
