Looking for info on SERZONE.

Posted by SPhobia on February 5, 2004, at 12:11:26

I just don't understand much about this med.

(1) Is it an SSRI?

(2) Is it commonly used to treat anxiety?

(3) Might it treat anxiety (esp. SAD) better than an SSRI? (I read one post of someone who said it completely eliminated her SAD)

(4) How are the side effects compared to common SSRI's? (especially sexual s/e's)

Thanks

> ---- Not SSRI, Serzone is a sort 'independent class of AD med.' Very special substance, even among pdocs. there is no formal theory/study about how Serzone works on your chemical. ---

Serzone has been taken off the "shlef" here in Canada. Apparently it can cause liver damage. And I believe either Englang or Australia also removed it from the shelf.

Just something to consider.

> (1) Is it an SSRI?

No, but it is a serotonergic med. It also effects norepinephrine.

> (2) Is it commonly used to treat anxiety?

Yes.

> (3) Might it treat anxiety (esp. SAD) better than an SSRI? (I read one post of someone who said it completely eliminated her SAD)

The clinical trials suggest that it is less effective than SSRIs for SAD. My own experience goes along with that, and for the most part, that's the impression I've gotten from others who've posted their experiences on the internet as well.

Sexual side-effects should not be a problem, but it may be more sedating that you would like. It's certainly worth a try, but it did next to nothing for my own SAD.
