lamictal reaction

Posted by Lyrical13 on February 4, 2004, at 19:49:30

Well, I started Lamictal about a week and 1/2 ago for BP2. All was fine for the first few days. Then on day 5 I noticed several small red spots that looked and felt and ITCHED like bug bites near my right eye. Later my entire body felt itchy...though strangely moreso on the right side. I took my evening dose of 25mg anyway thinking it could have been something else. Acne? But the next day was worse and the spots began appearing on the left side and the itching was all over. A nurse where I work looked up the beginning signs of SJS in her dermatology book and it described bilateral rash with initial lesions that resembled insect bites..... So I stopped that med. I took a couple doses of Benedryl and it's almost gone now (stopped it about 5 days ago) The worse part was AFTER I stopped it. I had a roller coaster weekend. Ultra rapid cycling. I have never had this experience before and it was terrifying. I almost hit my dog for something tiny and accidental. She bumped into my leg while she was playing and I was immediately in a rage. She looked so scared and sad, I felt so awful. THe next minute I was crying and a few minutes later I was OK. Then 10 min after that I was extremely irritable adn then depressed again and then OK and then euphoric and then irritable and then enraged. Not fun.

I had to leave work 1/2 way thru the day on Mon cause I was crying and couldn't stop. I saw my pdoc yesterday and we decided to continue on Effexor and starting increasing the SEroquel. Now I'm on 50mg but he wants me to be on 100-150mg a month from now. We'll see. I keep telling him I am very sensitive to meds and usually only require pediatric doses. He doesn't seem to believe me. I mean I got a rash on Lamictal at only 25mg doses. 1/2 of the smallest dose of Ambien konks me out for the night. For a long time I was on only 20mg of celexa and doing quite well. We'll see though. Really bummed to get a rash cause I was hoping Lamictal would work for me. But my pdoc didnt' want to take any chances. Said to stop med at slightest sign of rash so we did.

Your doctor doesn't listen to you.

Not really. But I am standing firm. I won't take any higher dose than I really need. The trick is to figure out if I'm really at the right dose or if I just think I am cause I'm feeling so good from the hypomania! :)
