old school antipsychotics

Posted by CareBear04 on January 28, 2004, at 17:21:16

What are people's experiences with the typical antipsychotics? Has anyone been on a low-dose of a mid-potency AP (probably not Haldol or Thorazine, but I don't know much about these drugs...) Do they cause weight gain? Do they knock you out? How often do they cause akathisia? Does anyone still take these drugs or are the atypicals all the rage now?

You said not Haldol, but I have taken Haldol regularly in the past.

Worked well enough, but had to take three other meds (Amantadine, Propanolol, and Benztropine) to combat the akathesia.

Hi...the older antipsychotics, in low doses, are quite safe..just as much as Risperdal. The bad side effects came when people in instiutions where doped up with up 10 times for many years. Plus, they are tons cheaper. Go for the sedating one, like Largactil, Mellaril, etc.

My psychiatrist says the new atypical antipsychotics have replaced the old medications in his practice.... Try the Zyprexa for a good antidepressant affect!!
IT rocks my world.
