ocd!!

Posted by winterbluez on January 28, 2004, at 14:12:36

hello i'll try to make this short~ i know i have some form of ocd but it doesn't seem to match up with the symptoms and types i read about online etc. my problem is i constantly have to reassure myself that evrythings fine by doing some act.
i think a good thought and then right away my something inside tells me i have to touch something or say a word to myself etc.
i look at my son and i get a good feeling but of course right away then something inside makes me have to protect that good feeling with some action i must perform or say to myself.
this goes on all day long until by the end of a day i'm so emotionally drained, anxious, depressed
that without taking a xanax i'd never sleep and definitely go crazy.i've been on paxil for 6 years now and it doesn't seem to help much with my condition. can anybody relate to this and is there any medication or something that can help stop this torture.
anything would be appreciated,, thanks so much
take care all~

Hi Winterbluez,

What you're describing sounds fairly common for someone with OCD. Have you discussed your symptoms with a psyciatrist?

I'm sorry the Paxil isn't working well for you. You might consider switching medications. Lexapro has a good reputation for combating OCD, there are several people on this message board who take it for just that reason!

What you're going through sounds exhausting. I hope you find some releif soon.

hi kathryn,,
i have switched to lexapro and have been on it for a week now. i feel very dissaccociated from everybody and everything though. plus i don't feel very sexual. i'm usually a very caring feeling kind of person and this med seems to have made me isolated from my normal self.
does this kind of se go away or do you think lex isn't for me??

Hi Winterbluez,

Lexapro takes a long time to kick in. You'll feel out of it until your body adjusts to it. (But yes, the side effects DO go away.) I'm on week 6 of 10 mg lex and just beginning to see results. If you're still feeling awful by week 4, I would suggest calling your pdoc to see what other medication options you have.

Combining lex with Welbutrin is supposed to help with the sexual side effects.

Hi, you sound like my husband except that he has to repeat numbers in his head to make things better so that nothing bad happens. He was on Prozac for years and did great on it. Recently he's tried Celexa and Effexor but they;re not as good for the OCD for him. They help with the deppression and Anxiety but not the OCD, so he'll probably go back on the Prozac. It did wonders for the OCD for him.

This sounds alot like my 16 year old daughter, diagnosed when she was in 5th grade with OCD. She's been on Luvox (sedating but helped with OCD sx), Prozac which turned her into a zombie, and now Lexapro which she says is helping her but how would I really know? As you all know OCD people are very adept at hiding their rituals so I can only hope and pray that she is really doing OK. She really hates for me to asking how she's doing with her OCD sx so I don't ask very often. Hope you get to see a psychiatrist to get some help.
