i have ocd and anxiety panic disorder, depression and have successfully been on paxil 40mg for 5 years, although the sexual side effects are getting a little old,(my poor husband)!i started welbutrin today. it is 3:16 am and i am wide awake i took it at 1pm! i had heard that welbutrin was good for quitting smoking, and increasing your sex drive so i asked my g.p. about it and she prescribed me to lower myself to 20mg paxil for a week and then quit and start 150mg of welbutrin 1x a day while weaning myself off the paxil. my problem is that after reading all of the information i could find on this board about welbutrin, i see it does not help with anxiety for the most part. should i really be discontinuing my paxil?i do not want to go through the horrible side effects of quitting paxil if it can be helped.at one point i switched from paxil to prozac without doing any weaning, i just quit paxil and started prozac with no major side effects like those pleasant shocking brain sensations! i did not prefer prozac and went back on paxil the same way, i was under the impression that i could do the same with the paxil to welbutrin, until i realized that they are for differant things and are not closely related like paxil and prozac.if i take these two together will it help the sexual side effects? while still giving me the benefits of the anxiety-panic control of paxil.what are your experiences with this? the welbutrin would also be great for me if it does induce weight loss and some extra energy sure would be welcome. there seems to be plusses to both. do these two work good together? i think i need to see a psychiatrist as my g.p seems not to know to much about the in and outs of each drug, but i would really appreciate anyone elses view points and experiences. thanks! tanya

Hi Faith,
In my experience a g.p. is horrible at prescribing meds, I strongly encourage you to find a psychiatrist. (Especially since you are in the middle of switching meds - a good pdoc can help you make a very smooth transition from one med to another.)
I've been considering going on Welbutrin, but some of my research indicates that it can actually cause anxiety in some people. The same is said about Prozac. If you didn't experience much anxiety on Prozac, you might not have a difficult time on Wellbutrin. However, you might consider keeping a low dose of Paxil or some other anti-anxiety med in your drug cocktail. (I've found Lexapro to be wonderful for anxiety, and I know several people who combine it with Welbutrin.)
You might want to ask your pdoc about taking an anti-anxiety med on an as needed basis. That way, if you're off Paxil and do have an anxiety attack you'll be able to take care of it. Lorazepam, Xanax and Klonopin are good meds to have in that kind of situation.
Weaning off meds can be tricky. I suggest you don't go off of Paxil entirely until you talk to a pdoc. (I've had my own share of bad experiences with g.p's giving bad med advice and wouldn't wish that on anyone.)
I hope some of this information is helpful. Good luck!
K.
