3 months ago I started taking Lexapro 10 MG and have seen amazing results! However, within a few weeks of starting the med I began to experience bladder pain and an urge to urinate frequently as well as a burning sensation. I have been tested twice for a urinary tract infection and do not have one. Anyone had similar side effects?

Hi Clight,
I have been on lex for 6 weeks now and haven't had any problems like you're describing.
My only thought is that lexapro can be dehydrating, are you drinking plenty of water? If your body is getting rid of fluids quickly, and there isn't a lot of liquid in there it might cause urination to be painful. So, cut back on the caffeine if you're drinking any and start drinking more water. See if alleviates some of your pain.
Has your doc looked in to the possibility of a bladder infection? I wish I could be of more help to you. Hope you feel better soon.
K.

I have similar SEs from Effexor. I don't have any burning sensation, but do have the frequent and sudden urge.
When I was trying to find out a couple of years ago why this was happening, the best I could come up with as an explanation is just a guess that it might have something to do with serotonin receptors in the bladder, the theory being that if the medication stimulates these serotonin receptors in the muscle of the bladder, the bladder can't relax enough to fill up completely. But I've not been able to get any real validation of this from any of my doctors. They nod and say well, it's possible. But they don't know.
I haven't researched it recently, though.
For me, it seems like it is slightly less severe with a lower dose, but it is still a problem I have to manage. It hasn't been enough to want to stop taking the med, which has helped me a lot, despite this and some other SEs. I wear liners all the time just in case and take preventive trips to the WC.
This is the end of the thread.
