I have been taking effexor for 4 months now for depression and anxiety. I have had wonderful results, except for the fact that I feel hungry all the time and have gained weight. In the past, I took Paxil and gained 40 pounds. I lost it all when going off for about a year. Now, I am concerned I will have a similar weight gain,but will not discontinue the effexor xr. Has anyone had experience combining weight loss drugs with antidepressents? My psychiatrist has recommended possibly using wellbutrin or synthroid to help with weight gain? Comments or suggestions?

This is one big reason I'm getting off this drug and currently in horrible withdrawals from it - day 14. Here you can read the truth about weight gain from these drugs:

They all cause weight gain because they SLOW your metabolism!!! The doctors don't tell you this because they get $$kick backs$$ from the drug companies! They want you on the drugs! Most drs don't care about their patients.
You can run 5 miles a day on your treadmill for a month and wont loose a single pound! I have tried it, I'm living proof. Your metabolism is so slow you are fighting a losing battle.

Thank you for your reply. I went to the link. There was some really interesting information. I find it all very depressing (ha,ha) because I have to stay on antidepressents or I slide into depression during stressful times. I am thankful the antidepressents work for my depression, however they are doing so at the expense of my health. My psychiatrist is one of the many that says antidepressents(especially effexor) do not usually cause weight gain, which we all know that they can. Why would effexor be any different?!

i took both lexapro and effexor and noticed weight gain also - i blamed it on the 'don't care' feeling they give and ate anything i wanted, just because i 'didn't care'.
i tired wellbrutin as well, and i lost weight with that because it surpressed my appetite.i am now on concerta bc the above did not help my depression and my pdoc is trying a new approach...thankfully, it too surpresses my apetite.

I am shocked. I've always lost so much weight and so fast on Celexa and Effexor. I guess they call it the anorexia effect?

I really wouldn't rely on any information found on that site: they're just trying to peddle their wares like all the others. That site asserts that psychiatry is a fraudulent business endeavor with no scientific basis whatsoever.

Drug manufacturers admit that they cannot prove their drugs work or show how their drugs work! They make alot of money and don't even have to prove that it works!
You have scientific proof these drugs work???? Would love to hear about that! They may be selling stuff, but the facts are the facts. These drugs DO cause weight gain and SLOW your metabolism and I am proof of that! So don't argue that fact, many people here have also said they gained weight on this drug. Don't tell lies about the realities of these drugs!

When I added topamax (100mg a day) for my migraines (preventative measure) it caused me to drop the 50lbs I gained from lexapro(20) and effexor(30). I am holding at a steady weight now.Its an anti-seizure med, and not a weightloss pill, but - it also has some mood stabilizing properties according to my p-doc.
I also told my p-doc that one of the things that makes my depression worse is my weight balooning up. I am 5'10. I do not need to be a model, but I want my weight to be below 200 because weight problems run in my family. It got up to 228.
