How can a stimulant not work??

Posted by jerrympls on January 23, 2004, at 19:31:04

My doc put me on Adderall XR and I feel nothing but spaced out. I was on Adderall about 2 years ago and it worked very well. How can it not be working now? I'm so frustrated! I'm on the same dosage too - 10mg. I'm still lethargic and apathetic but spaced out and tired. I'm going through this period where the meds I'm starting have the opposite effect - for ex: my pdoc put me on Vicodin and it made me anxious and dysphoric - it's NEVER done that before. Now I'm on Adderall and it's making me tired and spacey and anti-social.

I am so frustrated and at the end of my rope. I remember Ritalin used to work wonders many years ago - but I couldn't stand the ups and downs. But now that they have these new & improved extended release formulations (Concerta, et al) I'm wondering if I should switch to that - but what if it does the same thing?

I'm convinced my dopamine/reward/pleasure system is out of whack and need something to jump start it. My pdoc is getting a little frustrated too. She suggested an anti-psychotic - like Zyprexa, etc because they deal with dopamine - but I'm pretty sure they don't deal with the receptor subtypes I think I need - and aren't anti-psychotics basically supposed to "mute" the dopaminergic system?

I dunno...I'm confused and just can't take this.......anyone have any ideas?

Jerry

I hate to get all nutritional on you. But low b12 levels and high MAO-B levels are significantly correlated. As well there is a pretty distinct association between Omega 3 deficiancy and dopamine/reward deficiancies.

I found that when I boosed my Omega 3 intake the stimulants worked much better.

Quite a few also notice tha tyrosine supplemenation can increase stimulant effectivness, and reduce crashing.

Best of Luck

Thanks! I knew there was a good use for the flaxseed oil that I have. You reminded me to take some. I also take an antacid to boost the effects, which would indicate that a high level of acid would reduce the effects.
