I'm on 300mg's of Wellbutrin XL a day along with Topamax and Seroquel. I've been on the Topamax and Seroquel for a L-O-N-G time with pretty good response and on the Wellbutrin for around four months. I started with plan Wellburtrin then went to the SR and then the XL. I was hoping to get some of the activating side effects from the Wellburtin but I feel NOTHING! In fact I'm tired all the time! I want to sleep a lot and I mean a LOT! I see my pdoc on Monday and I just don't know what next. I have tried so many SSRI's with VERY bad out come. I'm bipolar so getting the right mix of meds is always a struggle. I've been on all kinds of meds for the past nine years and I'm out of ideas on what to do next. I'm thinking of stopping the Wellbutrin, I don't feel any positive effects from it so I think it's pointless to keep taking it and maybe just going back to taking only the Topamax & Seroquel. Has anyone else gotten tired from Wellbutrin ? Why would I have that effect from it ? I see that most people post that they get the activating effect from it!

I found I got sleepy on WB when mixed with an SSRI, after a few days of being on it. I've heard it gets more activating with a higher dose, but it sounds like you're already up there.
Who knows, I would guess the sleepiness is coming from the atypical APs you're taking, but it's an individual thing I guess. I'm trying WB w. SSRI for the third time and hoping for a better reaction.

Hi:
In regard to 'Wellbutrin' about which you're describing after taking for four months, it might be 'too much' that causes you 'too tired.' Normally, WB gives you 'motivation,' 'energy.' along with 'good concentration.' Then, it's very odd to read your post as to WB. In my guess, AP, Seroquel causes you to sleep 'too much,' not 'WB.' Or, this med. mix. simply does not suit to the system/chemical of your brain.
Besides this above, Topamax and Seroquel alone might NOT alleviate the depressive side of your Bp. Your BP sounds to me like Bp II that has mostly depression. In most cases, SSRI ADs are NOT good to Bp depression, in my knowledge. Rather, some of Bp folks saying this form of med. just aggrevates your dep. symptoms further. Certainly, ... this is all individual thing, then I can't be sure. Just precautious words to say about this.
I'm fairly happy about WB, however I've been on just 200mg.-300 mg.(mostly 200 mg.) along with other meds.
In my suggestion, if WB does not offer any relief, then you might need to go other form of AD such as older form of med. 'Nardil' and the like, ... however I have no experience on those 'older form of AD,' then I can't say about this tho'.
You may need more aggresive med. regimen to get your condition under control, ... in my suggestion, try to seek a second opinion from other good pdoc. in the town.
H.G.

I take the Seroquel at night not during the day.
So I don't think this is what is making me sleepy during the day. But if it is, do you have any ideas what I can take to help. I can't stop the Seroquel or lower the dose, it helps controls my hallucinations.

Hi,
Just to let you know I had a similar experience the second time I took Wellbutrin with an SSRI. I had been taking 20mg Celexa for depression and anxiety and had Wellbutrin SR 150mg added to help boost libido-it didn't really help, but I did get very stimulated when I started taking the Wellby., and also slight insomnia. I stopped taking the Wellby after a while. Months later I restarted the same combination to help get me out of the brain fog that 20mg of Celexa was causing me (after I'd been on Cel. a few months.)-funny thing was this time the addition of Wellb. made me sleepy during the day.
For you it could help to reduce the Wellbutrin dosage by switching to Wellbutrin Slow Release (SR) form 100mg-it could be that the once a day Wellbutrin XL effects on norepinephrine, and especially, dopamine, are causing the sleepiness.
This is the end of the thread.
