Hi,
I am relatively new to this board and am finding it very helpful but can't seem to find anything archived about very small doses of Zyprexa used to help sleep problems. Would 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg cause weigh gain over a month or two? Thanks for any help or advice!

It's posible. But much less likly than with a higher dose. Try the smaller dose first and see if it works.

Not to scare you but I gained 15 pounds on Zyprexa in 2 weeks at 2.5 mg. It all depends on the person. I stopped taking it for that reason. I have used seroquel for sleep and had no weight gain but it was for a short period of time.

Hi:
I've been on 5mg. Zyprexa for about two or three years, ... but so far 'NO WEIGHT GAIN.'
Just at the beginning of rx this med., I was so sleepy, ... practically most of the days I spent in the bed or on the couch in the living room without watching TV. But, after two or three weeks passed by, this sedative effect gradually disappeared.
I personally LOVE this med. more than anything else in the world. This med. made me back to the 'old myself' to get me stabilized. Then, I owe to Zyprexa on my happiness and stabilization of my Bp VERY HEAVILY.
BTW, it seems I'm in nature not get 'fat' except my baby-years(from born to about 2 year' old). Then, the metabolism, either body fat or your system might have some clue to whether gain weight or not. All of my side effects from psycho-meds. are mostly sleepiness, ... not more serious one to recall.

Low doses of Zyprexa gave me the late night munchies. I would literally feel like I was starving, and HAD to eat carbs. I knew I wouldn't be happy with the results if this continued, so I quit using it (although it was great for anxiety--didn't make me sleepy, though).
If you take it at night, and DO NOT eat before you fall asleep you will probably not gain weight on a low dose--just my guess.
I think antipsychotics cause weight gain primarily by stimulating the appetite. My grandfather is on the max dosage of Seroquel for his dementia, and he eats constantly.
Of course, in my experience it is hard to resist that effect, because you really FEEL like you have to eat and can't think about anything else until you do. In time, I think I could probably learn that "hunger is a thing of the mind, and the mind can be controlled," to loosely quote Mr. Spock.

Thanks so much for the advice!
I am seeing my doc today and will hopefully persuade her to put me on a sedating low dose of Seroquel as i cannot afford to put on any more weight...I piled on a stone with Sulpiride/Tegretol Retard (Trileptal in the States?)
Good luck all of you..Lyn
