Medication for Bipolar Disorder Anxiety

Posted by robynds on December 26, 2003, at 20:51:43

I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and Anxiety 9 years ago. Since then, I have taken Lithium, Prozac, Topamax, Effexor XR, Paxil, Ativan, Valium and a few other medications. They all had a promising start, then soon after, stopped working. My doctor kept raising the dose until I was taking the maximum dosage. He recently changed my medication to Parnate. Does anyone know how well Parnate works for Bipolar Disorder or what medications worked best for you?

Parnate is thought to be one of the better drugs for bipolar depression, and is usually chosen before Nardil. Are you to be on any mood stabilizers? It's usually a good idea to help prevent a switch into mania or hypomania. Have you tried Wellbutrin?

Good luck.

I was dx'd with Bipolar disorder 9 years ago as well. I tended to go to/stay in the manic mixed phase predominately. My doctors tried lithium, the anti-convulsants, etc., but I finally found peace with the antipsychotic Zyprexa. If you tend toward the depressive side of Bipolar, perhaps Parnate will work for you, but for mania/anxiety, it's Zyprexa for me.

robynds,

I agree with kotsunega. I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 two years ago and Zyprexa saved my life at the time. I eventually had to switch to abilify and then geodon because of weight gain, but not everyone experiences this side effect.

Zyprexa was a wonder drug for me and controlled my anxiety more than any benzo (xanax, klonopin) ever did. You might want to talk to your doctor about starting a low dose and seeing how much relief you get from it.

Take care and best of luck,

girl
