Doc gave me Viagra due to side effects - advice?

Posted by jerrympls on November 27, 2003, at 0:39:36

Hey all you men out there-

I'm only a 31 year old male - but the Nardil I am currently taking (120mg) has completely wiped out my sex drive AND ability to - well- maintain an erection, etc etc - this has been like this for 3-4 months now. So, my doc prescribed me a trial of Viagra. I'm kinda worried about taking it and having an erection for 3 hours....

Anyone out there share their experiences - what should I expect? How long? etc? Feel free to email me directly if you need to at jerrympls@mn.rr.com

thanks!!
Jerry

Yeah, what's so funny about someone having sexual side-effects??? Do you laugh at handicapped people, too?

The drug doesn't give you an erection for three hours without your consent... It just makes things work a hell of a lot better and increases your interest.

Jerry,

I can totally related. I have been on A/D's for 12 years and I can tell you first hand that viagra works, at least for me. Like any medication it may not work for everyone.

For me zoloft was the worse culprit. Prozac initially, 3 to 4 weeks, kills libido.

I am currently on prozac, remeron and lamictal and I no longer need viagra as remeron and lamictal has zero or little effect on libido and like I said prozac I have been on so long that it no longer interferes with my libido.

For awhile I was going broke since I am with Kaiser and they only pay for half. For 10 viagra tablets, I had to pay a little over $40.

As far as the extended erection is concerned, don't worry about it. The effects of viagra lasts from 3 to 4 hours, but that does not mean that you will have an erection for 3 or 4 hours. Also, there is a very rare condition that will require immediate medical care when an erection lasts and lasts. There is a medical term for it which escapes me at the moment.

So go for the blue! (Viagra is blue in color)

I guess I took your post the wrong way, but it sure seemed like you were laughing at someone for having problems in the bedroom... If I misunderstood what you said, I appologize.

Since lack of or decrease libido is a side effect of some A/D's, Jerry's question is a bonafide serious question that belongs in this thread. Go blue!

My doc gave me Viagra cuz Lexapro has made it really hard to achieve orgasm and made my erection less firm. Well, Viagra helps very well with the firmness of the erection. And you don't have to worry about it staying hard any longer than you want it to. But it does stay hard longer, which is a plus.

As far as reaching orgasm, I don't think it has helped at all. I convinced my doc to let me try Wellbutrin, which is supposed to help for that, along with the Lexapro. Been on WB XL 150 mg for about 2 weeks and so far it has not helped at all. Also, Viagra does not help at all with sexual desire, which has also decreased. That's why a lot of people don't refill their prescriptions, according to what I have read. All in all, I would say Viagra helps but does not solve the problem. Hope this helps!

Anyone tried either of these? How do they compare to viagra for AD sexual s/e's? I find viagra works pretty good but it is short acting.

Well, levitra is supposed to kick in quicker, while Cialis is supposed to work 36h. In France , where it is available for almost a year, already, they call it "the weekender".

U know: I have tried Viagra, ...for the heck of it. and while they say that ADs don't elevate the mood in non-depressed ppl, Viagra certainly "adds" to it, if dysfxn, or not, ...to the point that it can become annoying (for the male partner).

If I had to draw a cartoon, I would draw a guy in bed on his back side, with a laptop on his chest, his face would show slight but definite annoyance, whith the girl still up and riding wildly like in the Wild West...

Dr. Bob, I hate to beat a dead horse and I usually don't, but I don't see how you can take issue with my post and yet someone can LOL "laugh out loud" at someone else's post and that is NOT considered insensitive...
however, for the sake of peace and because I do know how fragile all of us can be, I apologize for my post in it's entirety....

So, have any of you who have used Viagra experienced any sort of increase in desire as well? I'm afriad to take it and then still have no desire to use it.

Jerry = frustrated.

I'd say it definitely increases desire.

Jon-- because I have NO desire - not just some desire sometimes - I mean it's absolutely gone. I look at erotic photos and nothing - not desire, etc - so my hope is Viagra will help a little?

I don't think Viagra increases sexual desire at all. It can increase your sexual self-confidence, however, which may make you want to have sex more. But if your desire is flagging, Viagra will probably not help, at least in my experience.

It did increase my desire, but I suppose it's different for everyone. There are better ways of increasing desire. You might want to try some herbal remedies for this. I found both Tongkat Ali (I used LJ100) and Indian Ginseng (I used Swedish Tranquility) very effective for increasing desire.

That is all it takes, just a little bit of desire. Like a previous poster wrote, viagra increases your confidence to perform so quite naturally, your desire as well.
