UnplannedPreg W/D from Lex, Adderall, Klonopin

Posted by katalina on November 28, 2003, at 8:44:27

I can't believe this has happened to me. To my complete shock (birth control failure), I found out I was pregnant 3 weeks ago. I've been in denial about it for the most part and even planned to terminate the pregnancy but was unable to go through with it last week knowing that I still had some time to reconsider my decision. I'm only 7 weeks. My girls are 3 & 4 and my husband is thrilled to be having another child, so the guilt is heavy if I terminate the feign a miscarriage.

Anyway, after I found out I continued my Lexapro, Adderall and Klonopin combo for about 5 days, cutting back each day and have taken nothing for 2 weeks, except 2 Xanax. I'm very worried about the effects of the drugs for the few weeks I took them while I didn't know I was pregnant. I was on 10 mgs. Lex, 40 Adderall XR and 1.5 mgs. of Klonopin daily. I know I CAN muddle through without drugs during a pregnancy (for some reason I feel better while I'm pregnant vs. not pregnant and non-medicated state) but I feel stressed and very irritable right now and can't believe that I'm going to have another child (the two that I have are very "spirited" - politically correct term for high probability to bug the living &%#$ out of adults).

Has anyone taken stims early in pregnancy and gone on to have a healthy baby? I feel sick about this (literally).

Thanks!

The sooner you discontinue the better. If you are to get off these drugs, then start taking as much fish oil as possible. When the fetus is growing it soaks up DHA (a fatty acid in fish oil) and promotes optimal brain function. I think you have a good chance of having a healthy baby as long as you feed yourself optimally.

You can do searches on the DHA, baby IQ link if you like. Many baby formulas are supplemented with DHA for this exact purpose.

Good Luck.

Hi..I understand totally where you are coming from and exactly how you are feeling right now.I have a 5 yr old son which was not planned for either. At the time I found out I was pregnant I was on 2 mgs a day of Klonopin and 50 mgs of Zoloft.I was 6 weeks along when I found out I was pregnant, and stopped my meds cold turkey that day.Was not walk in the park.I too was worried about the 6 weeks that I was taking the meds not knowing i was pregnant...But It all worked out well...My 5 yr old is happy, very healthy and aslo very spirited :)
I do know in severe cases, of women who have had to take AD during thier pregnancies because they just couldnt not be off of thier meds...discuss this with your Dr...I know you feel upset right now,but a lot of it is your hormones freaking out.Good Luck and take care..try not to worry...Keep me posted :)

Hi:

Lauren Slater, in the anthology "Unholy Ghost" (a collection of stories written by people suffering from mental illness..which includes Lauren's story) talks about the risks not only to the child, but to the mother if you decide to go off your medications. Remember, you risk relapsing, and the stress you encounter could even do more harm than good. Now, there are specific maternal doctors who can help you out with psych. meds and pregnancy. There is more than one risk, as you know, so I honestly think you should seek a number of competent, professional opinions before choosing to stop medication.

Best wishes,
Jay

i took an ssri (sory i dont even remember which) from 5 months (when i started treatment) to birth and my daughter was fine and perfectly healthy; i'd talk to a doctor about it, or even call a pharmacist because some meds can be harmful earlier in pregnancy,if you were to change ur mind

and, u should do whatever u feel is the best thing, not what everyone else wants. ur wants and capabilities are important! and if you need help making a decision try talking to someone...friend, family, hotline (except the ones run by the religious right) social-babble, whomever
take care

And why not the religious right?
