Prozac withdrawal; info on shocks?

Posted by Bee-girl on November 21, 2003, at 3:16:18

Hi there,

I'm trying to find out if anyone has any info on how long the withdrawal symptoms from going off of Prozac last- specifically the "electrical shock" things that run through my head and body.

I've been on and off a handful of anti-depressants for about 10 years now, and this is it! I'm never going back on if I don't have to because these "shocks" suck so bad- not to mention all the other withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to function!

I've been weaning off for several months and am now down to about 1/3 of a 10mg capsul about every 4 or 5 days. I've gone over a week without any at all, but once the shock get to a certain point of intollerance, I have to break open a pill.

Anyway, any info would be so greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hi i think alot of people get the ''shocks'' coming of medications i had them comeing of effexor cold turkey and celexa.. nothing to worry about they will go away.. although i did have the shocks for a few mnths when i came of effexor cold turkey, i had to stop the effexor as after taking it for a few mnths for my anxiety i did abuse it the last time i took it, you will be fine.

If you don't mind me asking, in what way did you abuse effexor. What reactions did you get?

Just curious, not condescending at all.

Not crazychick but...

I had to watch abusing Effexor, the Immediate Release version. Those would calm me down quickly. I would want to take more whenever I was stressed to get that hit of "calmness".

I'm not sure if others abused it in another way.

Hey,

Thanks you guys for the responses. I appreciate it so very much!

Just curious, does anyone know what causes the shocks? Is it some kind of chemical malfunctioning or something? I've asked several doctors about it and only one of them actually knew what I was talking about (go figure!!!!) But the one who did just said "Huh, we don't really know why that happens...it just does to some people."

Anyway, just thought I'd ask because it seems like the members who are contributing to this website are way more informed than any of the doctors I've ever been to!

Thanks so much!
