Lexapro Poop-out..would an increase help?

Posted by almondjoy on November 18, 2003, at 3:07:55

From what I've been reading I think lex is pooping out. i started it maybe 3 months ago, the first couple weeks on 10mg were good, then i started to feel more like before i started so at one month pdoc increased to 20mg...the s/e returned but i felt great for a month or so. then i noticed my anxiety coming back, and moodiness etc. i feel almost like im not even taking it anymore. even though 30 isnt a typical dosage would that help...i mean, maybe we just never hit the right dose but it could just be its not for me....humh i dunno

You need to take folic acid with all SSRI's

there is some theory about SSRi's and that poop out is related to low folic acid levels.

When I took Celexa, I was able to half my dose with the addition of folic acid, and still get a very good responce.

Take 1 mg if you are not already, it is a water soluble vitamin, and it is very safe. YOu should notice the added benefit within a week. It is the one of the cheapest vitamins available. It's worth a try.

I agree with Linkage that folate might help. You could take a multivitamin.

If that doesn't do it, you should increase your dose to 30 mg. I have been on 20 mg Lex for 12 months. I may increase to 30 soon. The 20 only lasts about 20 hours, then the effect diminishes. The most economical way to increase is to take 1 and 1/2 20mg pills. (instead of a 10mg pill and a 20mg pill).

I'm on Lexapro 10mg/day and Wellbutrin 150mg/day. I take a multivitamin with 400mcg (100%) folic acid. Think that's enough?

Women in child bearing years are supposed to take folate (in pill form- food with folate is not adequate)in order to minimize the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect such as spina bifida. The dose is either 400 or 800 per day- I forgot which.

For anxiety and depression, other good vitamin supplements are B6, B12, and magnesium. I like using a multivitamin with more than 100% of the B vitamin requirements since it gives me more energy.

the National Institutes of Health recommends 400 mcg for women except in some instances, like alchoholism and liver disease, plus others

Mrs R,

Why are you taking the Lexapro together with the Wellbutrin? I just started that combo myself, and I was wondering how you got onto that regimen.

I also think my Lexapro has been pooping out on me. I have been on Lexapro since March (about 8 months) and my symptoms (depression, anxiety, obsession) are starting to return. I started briefly on 10 mg and then quickly moved to 20 mg which has worked very well for me, with the only side effect difficulty achieving orgasm. Has anyone tried switching to a different SSRI? Thanks.

After 5 weeks of Lexapro, I'd experienced an uncontrollable weight gain and my sex drive completely disappeared, so he started me on the Wellbutrin XL to try and counter these effects. It has helped. My appetite has been stunted and my sex drive is slowly coming back.

I take both in the morning upon waking, have no trouble sleeping at night and don't have that groggy feeling in the morning. I'm very lucky to not be experienceing much of any side effects.

The good thing is I feel great!! Much more motivated and full of energy. Getting out and doing more things for me and getting back into some of the hobbies I used to enjoy.

Thanks. I won't take any more of it, then.
