Wellbutrin + klonopin - how risky?

Posted by tensor on November 9, 2003, at 17:01:33

Hi,

My major concerns about asking my pdoc about wellbutrin is the risk of seizures. I've read an article that this is espescially risky if you take sedatives regularly, which i do, namely klonopin. What are your experiences about this? What is the nature of seizures? Am i too worried about this?

Thanks in advance

Wellbutrin does have a reasonably low incidence of inducing seizures. I don't believe that use of sedatives increases the risk, I think that withdrawl from sedatives could increase the risk.

Sedatives are generally anticonvulsant - reduceing seizure activity, however withdrawl from them can increase the seizure likelyhood.

If you have no prior history of seizures, and maintain a level use of sedatives, there is no problem. However you might not want to to withdrawl from 10 mg of Klonazapam while starting wellburin :)

There are so many factors to consider, but I think in general you have little to worry about.

Hi, Understandable concern! How about taking an AED W/ the WB, which will decrease your likelihood of getting a seizure if you decide to give WB a shot.
I worry about it too, I hear you :-)
Never can be too worried, it's your body and your mind~just be proactive in your treatment:-)
Take care and best of luck to you!

Klonopin was originally marketed as an anti-seizure med, and I've taken it with Wellbutrin with no problem. As someone else pointed out, the main danger would be rapid withdrawal from Klonopin while on WB (and rapid withdrawal from benzos is risky anyway).

The reports of seizure risk from WB are exaggerated, and are based largely on early studies that used doses much higher than those normally prescribed now. The main people at risk are those with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

I found WB much too anxiety-provoking, but others do very well with it, and Klonopin did reduce this problem for me (although I wound up discontinuing WB due to a variety of side effects).
