Sustained Release Xanax

Posted by Snowie on November 8, 2003, at 12:13:26

I haven't searched the archives, but my pdoc just told me that Xanax SR (or whatever they're calling it) is now available in the US. It's been available in Europe for years, but apparently received FDA approval in the States. My pdoc said it's expensive - $3 a pill. Nothing worked better for me on GAD than Xanax, but when I added Neurontin to the mix, Xanax didn't seem to work as well. Just wondering if anyone in the States is taking the sustained release form of Xanax, and any comment. Thanks.

Hi,
I'm using the extended release alprazolam (Xanax) right now. In the USA. I get it in 1 mg strength from Medco Health at $45.00 for 60 pills under a medical plan.

It is called Xanax XR, not SR. Hope that helps.
Regards,
BobS.

Bob,

Thanks for responding. I figured it was either Xanax XR or SR. I assume you mean that you pay $45 under your insurance plan at work? You didn't mention how you like it, but I assume that since you get it you must like it. Does it last that much longer than regular Xanax?

My pdoc put me on Strattera to see if it might help for what he thinks might be ADD. He gave me a starter pack and then a prescription. I thought I paid $8 for generics and $30 for non-generics, but I was charged $50 for the Strattera! I paid for it and will take it, but I'm going off of it once the month is up.

I'm on Xanax XR .5mg 3x day for anx.
I had used Ativan but it was losing its effect and my pDoc wanted to try something with a longer acting profile. By some coincidence my last visit was JUST after the Xanax sales rep left his office!
It seems to be pretty good, although expensive (I'm blessed to have good insurance)
I've never taken Klono so I can't compare them but if I didn't have insurance, I'd definitely try generic Klono as an alternative.

Snowie,
Actually, I don't like it because I can't vary my dose. On regular Xanax on good days I take less and on bad days more. Also, depending on your metabolism you can feel it wane before 12 hours. I am clueless how it can be used for 24 hour dosing.
