lexapro and booze

Posted by chewy on November 5, 2003, at 23:03:45

I have decided to try Lexapro to help relieve anxiety. I enjoy social drinking and look foreword to my evening cocktail. From what i have read, it sounds like I will have to lay off the hooch while on this med. Any comments appreciated.

Drinking while on any AD is not recommended but I think we all do from time to time. The lexapro affects people differently. I have found that the lexapro dramatically increases the effects of alcohol. For me, I feel dizzy if I try to keep up with my pre-lexapro days. The good news is that I save money when go out now by now drinking as much. ;-)

Please be careful.

Lexapro was the only SSRI to ever give me problems while drinking... More than a beer or two, and it made me feel nauseous and dizzy and horrible and just out of it. I didn't want to drink while on that med. Hope it treats you better, but alcohol and mental illness aren't a good idea for most people anyway.

Good Luck,
Jon :)

thanks Jon and wildflower for your response. My body could use some rest from daily consumption of various types of brew.

i agree that limiting alcohol is a good idea (and saves $$) but the fact is that i've been on lexapro for 3 months - and i had a few stretches of drinking frequently (like 2 beers or so a night). i haven't had any issues from the alcohol per se. but if you search on lexapro - you'll see i just posted about lack of energy, motivation to work out, weight gain.

true - i have been drinking and eating not too healthy - which undoubtedly contributed to weight gain, but i've had stretches without the alcohol and better food.. and the lack of energy, tiredness has occred in both times.

fyi.
