Hi all, I was told by my psychdoc today that I need to be taking brand name prozac, that the capsule of the generic brand causes less of the drug to be absorbed. Well, my insurance won't pay for a brand name when there is a generic available. Has anyone else experienced this lesser effect on generic prozac? If so, what about putting the powder in orange juice or somethin and gagging it down that way?
Thanks for any info.Donna

I have tried generic fluoxetine in the past (in capsule form) at 20mg/day for a month -- didn't do a thing for me. Perhaps your doc is right? I've never taken the brand made by Eli Lilly, but two weeks ago I started on a different brand of generic Prozac and feel *great*. Get your prescription filled at Walgreens -- they carry the Par Pharmaceutical brand of fluoxetine which are caplets, not capsules. (call ahead to make sure that's the brand they have in stock though -- I'm not sure if it's the same all over the country; if not, call the other pharmacies until you find one that carries the Par brand)

Par only makes the fluoxetine in caplets in the 10 and 20mg dosage strengths; they also manufacture 10, 20, and 40mg capsules. Make sure to ask for the tablets!

I am relieved to know that this may be the cause of the problem I have been having, depression and anxiety despite the medication. I was afraid I was getting tx resistant. I have tried everything, prozac was the first one I took long ago so I had high hopes it may still work for me now. Should know better to get my hopes up. My psychdoc assures me that the selegeline patch will be out the first quarter of next year but I am definately not getting my hopes up on that one.Donna

That's great that they carry it! It sounds like you're saying you tried other generic fluoxetine with disappointing results... I know the feeling, lol. This stuff is the real deal though. Like I said, keep us posted! :-)
