I am thinking about trying Remeron next for my depression and sleep problems. I have had bad luck with most of the AD's that have serotonin re-uptake inhibiting properties.
I have read different descriptions of Remeron and cannot quite figure out how it works. Some say it has SSRI properties and others make it sound like it does not inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, but allows more to go through.
Can someone please explain the action of Remeron? Can anyone suggest anything else to take if I have been having severe problems with all AD's that have SSRI action (Effexor, Elavil and St. John's Wort)
It is very strange because when I take fish oil by itself or magnesium by itself, they both make me feel incredibly depressed and anxious within hours of taking them. I am very confused as to what is going on. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone have any idea how the action of Remeron works as an anti-depressant? Thanks!

Remeron's first and most potent action is as an Histamine 1 antagonist. Then it next (at higher dosage) is a Norepinephrine Alpha 2 antagonist, and finally it it's an antagonist of the Serotonin receptors 5-ht2a, 5-ht2c and 5-ht3. It doesn't affect 5-ht2b...which apparently is the one that causes sexual side effects. So it's Serotonin activity doesn't come into to play until higher doses. I've read that as being both 37.5 and 45mg. I'm not sure how accurate they (researchers) can really be. Basically at a very low dose (7.5mg) all you get is the Histamine blocker, giving the sedation.
Hope that helps.
