I'm considering giving this med a try instead of OxyContin when I see my pain doc on Monday. I think I recall trying it in the past, but I can't recall very well... does anyone know if the homatropine dulls the hydrocodone effect or anything? (I know that anticholinergics usually potentiate opioids)
BTW, Hycodan are 5mg hydrocodone and 1.5mg homatropine in the U.S. In Canada they're pure hydrocodone... lucky S.O.B.s. ;-)

i imagine the addeded homatropine would just yuck it up - increased sedation, dry mouth, slowed congitive abilities. If you are thinking of going on Oxycontin, then why are you considering a weak non-extended release med like Hycodan? If you're looking for serious pain relief you need something like Oxycontin, MS Contin, Fentanyl Pathces - not a low-level cough syruop.

I was hoping to try hydrocodone because morphine makes me incredibly nauseus (as does Dilaudid) and I just stopped using Duragesic-50, which was a HORRIBLE drug. I don't find oxycodone to be any more powerful than hydrocodone -- sure there's the extended release thing, but I guess hydrocodone's always worked better on my depression, which is one reason I'm taking the narcotics. Suppose I could just have a prescription written for a pure hydrocodone syrup that I can fill at a compounding pharmacy.

I'm not sure that any compounding pharmacy can create a liquid hydrocodone syrup(I could be wrong). The homatropine is used in the cough syrup to help dry up secretions associated with a cough requiring treatment. The amount of hydrocodone required to supress cough is much lower than that required for analgesia. Your best bet for pain control would be something like lortab, although you have to watch out for how much acetaminophen you take in, given the risks of liver toxicity.

If you could get your doctor to write that, sounds like a fine idea. And from what I've heard about your doc, he seems like a cool, open-minded, non-judgemental guy... so yeah. I just figured you would want something you could dose just a couple times a day, rather than every 4 hours or so. I personally find oxycodone to be about 25% stronger than hydrocodone, but that's just me. However, I prefer hydrocodone just like you.

I've had it done before, so I'm sure they can do it.

It's also there to help prevent abuse, from what I understand.

I can't take acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, etc. Allergic to all of them -- that's why I need plain old hydrocodone.
