In reply to Why isn't Wellbutrin prescribed in UK anyone know?, posted by slinky on September 24, 2003, at 19:57:07
Very very good question, and one I nag my psych about every time I see him..
Annoys me that my bro is on it to give up smoking, yet I can't take it for depression where nothing else has really helped..
So damned unfair if you ask me

Hi Dr Bob,
I ask monthly!!! Zyban is what it is known as over here, as its only available as smoking cessation aid. It is not allowed to be prescribed for depression.
I knew one guy (from here) that had managed to get Wellbrutin on a private prescription from a private pdoc he was seeing.. but I have never found anyone else!

Here in the UK, Wellbrutin isn;t allowed to be prescribed for depression purposes.. and for smoking cessation its only allowed for 6 weeks..
I have no idea why, I really don't...

To try to improve the choice available, Glaxo Wellcome investigated with some success a slow-release form of bupropion in bipolar disorder, which has noradrenaline reuptake inhibitory activity but appears to act in depression by blocking dopamine reuptake. So far, it is available in the USA and a licence application is planned for Europe.
