sexual dysfunction and zoloft

Posted by chewy on September 23, 2003, at 23:05:35

can anyone tell me if the sexual dysfunction side effect from zoloft weakens over time?

I can't decide if my anxiety and depression are so bad that I'm willing to give up my sexual appetite to feel better.

also, is there weight loss related to Zoloft?

Hi!
I was on 50 mg. of Zoloft from June 3 until about 2 weeks ago. Within a few days of starting, I noticed that my sex drive had significantly decreased. Nothing could get me in the mood, and when I tried to have sex anyway, I could not climax. About a month ago my doctor added Wellbutrin to counteract these side effects, but it really has not helped, so two weeks ago she cut my dose of the Zoloft to 25 mg. and upped the Wellbutrin to 300 mg. I haven't noticed much of an improvement yet, but I'm hoping! Are you experiencing any sexual side effects? I would love to hear someone else's experiences. By the way- I have actually gained about 8 pounds since starting the Zoloft, which is another reason I am switching medications.
Take care!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your response.
I am easing off of effexor because it just didn't take to me. Six weeks into it and I still feel heavy headed and under the spell of a medication. It to had a negative sexual side effect..
Now my doc. is suggesting Zoloft to begin in a few days. From what I have been told and read it sounds like a good ad. Every source indicates that Zoloft is not a good bed partner!
I have always had a strong sexualappetite, so this will be a challange!
I will keep in touch(so to speak!) and let you know how I do with this med.

thanks for your sharing!

I have been off and on Zoloft for the past 5 years. It's worked the best out of all the SSRI's for my depression. But I had no sexual desires. I also started losing my hair. I have been off the zoloft for a year now, my sexual desires are slowly coming back. My hair finally quit falling out in chunks. I go back to psychiatrist in two weeks to find a new med. for my depression.

Hi guys!
I have been weaning of the Zoloft for over 2 weeks now and I am happy to report that my sex drive is coming back! I have also been enjoying sex much more, to the delight of myself and my boyfriend. I am so happy to know that it was definiely the Zoloft causing this problem and not me. I am still on the 300 mg. of Wellbutrin and seem to be doing fine. I am a little weepy lately, probably because of the Zoloft withdrawl, but I'm hoping this will all pass and I can just be happy. Well, good luck to you! Keep in touch, let me know how things are going with you.
Take care,
Lisa

Personally, I had neither reduction in sex drive, inability to orgasm nor signifigant weight gain on zoloft. Sadly, it did poop out after a while....

I DID have significant weight gain on Paxil, however...but no reduction in sex drive. Orgasm was not an issue..(selfish partner) LOL

Celexa and lexapro interestingly, have simply taken away my abilty to orgasm exept on rare occasions.

Go figure it all out!!! I simply cannot!!!
Sometimes I just wonder if it is simply a weight gain of signifigant amounts that has made me anorgasmic (if that is a word)

Hope this helps....

Wellbutrin, serzone and remeron (the great weight gainer---caveat emptor) supposedly have no sexual side effects....that is if they work for you.

Best of Luck

hey do you find that celexa is much more sedating than others (even paxil)? like i want to sleep 14 hours a day on the thing. and it leaves me feeling emotionally numb. apathetic. etc... paxil, effexor, parnate actually got rid of my depression. but celexa seems different

Hi cybercafe,

If you are referring to the celexa and sleep, well, it was not at all sedating for me. The only thing that ever really sedated me was Remeron. I really hope that it is just a side effect for you and that it has already gone away :-).

I saw the sexual side effects stuff I wrote in a previous post....

yeah i have never tried remeron but i hear it is quite good for sleep

celexa still keeps me sedated... but with abilify and ritalin i can manage it

the biggest problem is that it doesnt' get rid of my depression, but instead puts me in a apathetic/anhedonic state

thanks for your reply :)
