Adderall isnt worknig anymore

Posted by superRitchie on September 19, 2003, at 19:14:31

Hey guys, I've tooken adderall for almost 4 years, adn it has always been there to help me get motivated on a lazy sunday after noon when i dont feel like doing my homework. It used to make me euphoric, and really motivated to do my work. But now that euphoria is not even noticable! It's not a tolerance either, becuase i should of developed that years ago! Ive always tooken 30mg and i get the same feeling and motivation every time until recently. I'm 16 now, maybe ive grown or something, so i dont feel the same effects. Already tried strattera, that stuff is equvilant to taking nothing, doesnt work at all! Ive hurd of desoxyn, but i know for a fact that it won't be the first thing my doctor has in mind, do they still use it as an ADHD medication? Well someone please tell me something because my grades are dropping. Thanks

A lot of people experience what you described, so you're not alone. Your doc needs to work with you on, perhaps, a combination med to supplement the ADHD med.

One viable option is a low dose of Wellbutrin and a low dose of dexadrine combination. It may take a while to feel harmonized with the combination, but start low and see how it goes.

I had the same experience with Dexedrine. It worked for a little while then gave up.

If adderall used to make you euphoric that is a strong indication that you do not have ADD. You could have depression that is making you have a lack of motivation. I would try to get re-assesed if I were you.

Sarah's probably right. I don't get euphoric with the stimulants. Did you mean 30 mg all at once, or 10 mg each at three different times? You could ask to try an ssri to see if that helped. They take longer to work, but might help you.

Try taking it with a bit of baking soda and/or calcium carbonate (eg Tums). Don't take it with much food or drinks or anything acidic. It's better absorbed without.

Another option is to take it with a low dose of l-tyrosine, an amino acid, or acetyl tyrosine. Talk to the doc who should have more info on this.

Sometimes adderall stops working for me too. Usually it's due to stomach problems (too much acid) or a bout of depression. In the latter case, a very low dose antidepressant works fine.

Best...

Nahh..the problem here is probably amphetamine tolerance/sensitization. You should take 2 days off every week of Adderall/Dexedrine and, if you are able to obtain it, take partial NDMA antagonist - for example acamprosate or memantine.

I am currently on WB 100mg sr AM / 100mg. at noon

My pdoc has changed her dx and is considering I may be ADHD and wants to add something to the WB. She has mentioned strattera and dexidrine.

I am curious what is considered a low dose?

I am sensitive to meds and shes not good and titration.

You might try a medication holiday. Have you changed your diet lately. Adderall is effected greatly by how much and how soon you eat before or after taking. After 4 years you might just need an increase of 5 mg to make it work again.
I take dexedrine sr and short acting adderall.
2 15 mg dexedrine sr with 5 mg short acting adderall. 25 mg of adderall mid afternoon.

For me, this worked great: 75 or 100 mg WB a day, and 5 or 10 mg dex a day. And it took me weeks to aclimate to this dose, after I added WB.

I could not take WB with Adderall (too agitating), and I personally would not recommend Strat and dex, as they both activate norep, no dopamine.

I had to stop the WB due to hairloss. So now I take 12 mg dex a day. But the WB really helped with fatigue and stamina. Dex leaves me wilted and worthless as the end of the day.

Oh also, I could not take both in the morning. I took dex in the AM, and WB around noon or midafternoon. It would blow me away to take them both together in the morning.

It took weeks to figure all this out and when it began to feel great, alas, I had to stop as the hairloss was getting out of control.

Anyone else have hairloss experience on WB?

I take Strattera and Adderall (Adderall is similar to dexedrine). The typical "target" dose of Strattera for an adult is 80 mg/day, but (in my experience at least, and apparently that of many of my pdoc's other patients), this is definitely a drug to titrate up on. I think the lowest available dose is 18 mg; the starter packs I got contained 25 and 40 mg pills.

25 mg was fine, but each dosage increase (to 40, then 65 mg) caused mild nausea, muscle aches, and dry mouth. The symptoms lasted a few days to a week in each case, then went away (except dry mouth, which isn't too bad). You should be able to get samples of 18, or at most 25, mg to try. It's a good drug for me, but my pdoc agrees that starting at too high a dose can be very uncomfortable for a lot of people.

I take 10 mg Adderall/day (sometimes as little as 5 mg). This is considered a very low dose, but it helps. More makes me a bit irritable. I'm not sure about dosing for dexedrine, but I'm guessing the amounts would be similar, given that they're both forms of amphetamine -- Adderall is just a mix of four different amphetamine salts. The pills (Adderall, at least) can easily be broken if you want to try even less. Strattera comes in capsules and supposedly shouldn't be divided.

superRitchie,
Can you give more info on your dose and the dates this happened. Was it imediate or was it gradual? To help support Ritchie's case I've been on and off adderall for 4 years also. 30 mg dose three times a day. Now the last time I got it filled I had to take the generic brand because the pharmacy wouldn't give me anything else even though my script said non generic only. Then at the beginning of september I got a new script for 30 mg adderal (literally had to fight with the pharmacy to get it) and I also notice a GREAT difference in how it is working. I have a concern that i'm going to bring up with my doctor but my concern is that this isn't adderal for some reason. Adderal always gave me the a slight feeling similar to what you were discribing and I don't have that at all. Also have trouble getting up in the morning and I started taking half a pill and hour before I usually get up to wake me up, now with this new script I took a 30 because I felt like it wasn't waking me up as much and I ended up sleeping in 5 hours later then I should have, to me being able to sleep soundly when just taking 30mg of adderall on an empty stomic is unheard of. I take a tums with it also to nuterlaize stomic acid.

It would help to know the dosing schedule you,re on(30mg once a day,10mg3x a day, etc.)I gave Adderrall a trial run for several months and I did,nt get along with it too well(too many pronounced side-effects).I went to regular Dexedrine 3x a day(20,20,and10),it seems to do better for me than Adderrall or Ritalin, just my system likes it better,I guess.Festus

Hi superRitchie, I have also noticed that when I am run down adderall doesn't work very well. Taking a couple days to rest usually helps, but it is hard to find two days in a row where I will not need to be functioning. I have learned the hard way that if I don't take the time I will get a sick and have to take the time anyway. :)

Hey Guys, im back, i talked to my phyciatrist about adderall's failure. I also told him i've really been depressed and lost motivation lately, which i have. He's taking me off it, and recommends that i start Effexor, and also putting me on an anti-phycotic! that is the *most* riduculus recommnedation ive ever hurd. I'm not phycotic! I just told him that sometimes my thoughts go really fast and i cant control them, which is proubly from ADD, not skits. I extremly disagree with this so called phyciatrist, plus anti-phycotics block dopamine production. Hopefully he will change his mind, but he told he doesnt want me on any amphetamine stimulant. If i keep having troble with him, im switching. Well i need some advice just in general about this situation, please someone tell me something. Thanks guys

DXM for Adderall tolerance » superRitchie

You can try dextromethorphan (DXM) for amphetamine tolerance - found in anti-cough syrups (Robitussin). 60 mg is supposed to block NDMA receptor which is responsible for amphetamine tolerance. I'd give it a shot if I were in your shoes :)
