Strange symptoms when depressed

Posted by huggave on September 17, 2003, at 18:16:35

Has anyone experienced strange physical symptoms when depressed, like:
-muscle jerks spread all over the body but most in the lower part (only a small part of the muscle not the whole one),
-increased skin feeling om small areas (paresthesias),
-burning sensations on small spots of the skin with short duration (approx 10-30 sec),
ache from the right hip.
These strange things often appear with my more "normal" depressive symptoms.
I think its a kind of increased tension/anxiety/CNS-hyperexcitability -sign.

hi Huggave,
Ive had all these symptoms from benzo withdrawal but not from depression.

Yes, that sounds like the symptoms I've experienced with drugs that supress anxiety, the benzos being the best example.

Bob, did you experienced these symptoms during benzo-treatment or when you quit or decreased the dose?

Actually, both. I had been taking Topomax, which very effectively addressed the physical aspects of anxiety, such as muscle tension and tightness. However, Topomax very nearly killed me psychologically and also gave me 4 sizeable kidney stones, so I had to get off of it ASAP. Reducing the dosage of Topomax quickly almost resulted in suicide and intensified the psychological anxiety. As a result, I had to quickly resort to Clonazepam. I therefore had the symptoms you speak of from the withdrawl of Topomax. Later, when I tried to withdrawl Clonazepam, though they had lessened, they returned with a vengeance.

In past episodes of severe depression, I've also noticed increased skin sensitivity and a "burning" skin feeling. Another sure physical sign of serious depression for me is change in taste perception -- things that I normally like taste awful, and I can only eat very bland foods (usually I like strong flavors).

Depression definitely can have major physical manifestations -- after all, your nervous system is seriously out of whack when you're depressed, and this can have all sorts of unusual effects.

Thanks for your input Liligoth,Bob and Viridis!

I tend to think its a kind of increased tension/anxiety/CNS-hyperexcitability -sign, as you Bob and Liligoth have experienced this at withdrawal from benzo and topamax.
Would be interesting to try topamax/lamictal etc to see if it had som effect on these symptoms.

Did you ever get these symptoms before withdrawing from the different drugs? Have you looked into Temporal Lobe Epilepsy? I don't know how helpful that diagnoses really is other than to suggest AEDs like Tegretol and Trileptal. But I admit, I'm not that knoledgeable of TLE.... I know it can have a wide range of symptoms.

They started years ago when I didnt take any drugs, and I have recognized them belong to the depresssve episode.
