Anti-psychotic as sleeping pill

Posted by Guy on September 13, 2003, at 11:15:59

I've tried so many meds for sleep...most make me feel sick, especially the anti-depressants. Clonazepam worked for a time then pooped out. I sleep well with Zyprexa but the bloating and constipation is incredible. Can anyone suggest another anti-psychotic that is good for sleep. I don't care if it is an old one as I plan to be on a very small dose, and I think the risk of a movement disorder is pretty low when used like that.

Seroquel is excellent for sleeping, and I think it is a bit cheaper than Zyprexa. That's all of the experience I have...sorry..but you shouldn't have to hard a time in choices.

Best,
Jay

Yes, Seroquel is probably your best bet. Many people find benefit with a little as 25 mg.

Benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonpin) are only used for sleep for short-term problems. Their sedating effects will wear off after a few weeks of use.

Serequel is good. Don't feel groggy in the morning.

I've been on seroquel for Bipolar II for about 3 months now, and 50mg still makes me pretty sleepy. 50mg is my nighttime dose, along with 25mg doses in the morning and afternoon, so that I am still able to function.

I would say that sedation is the only side effect I've had so far. There's been some weight gain, but I think that was due as much to sedentary lifestyle as anything else.

I've felt *so* much better because of the drug that I've taken up going to the gym again; so hopefully, that will address the weight issue.

I hope it works for you.

Serequel seems to be weight neutral

Have not had weight gain side effects on Serequel as I did on Risperdal/Zyprexa. Weight gain is also dose dependent with Serequel, so if you are on a low dose it shouldn't be as much of an issue.

Thanks, but...

Thanks for your ideas, but unfortunately Seroquel, even at small doses, made me deathly ill (headache, nausea, malaise, etc.). My shrink would not believe me, but I know that drug was like poison to my system. Just goes to show how different we all are.

Hey Guy~just a thought.....I took SEROQUEL for sleep, and it worked GREAT!. I started at 75mg and went up to 200mg. It worked really well for me.
Good luck!:-)

Well, there goes the Seroquel idea.
How about RESPIRDAL?
I took that for a while and it made me sleepy.
We are all different, you're right, I hope you can find something that works for YOU:-)
Good luck.

Hi Guy!
(I love saying that.)
I have been blessed with a great new pdoc.
He immediately took me off of Risperdal
due to possible TD. I was taking .25mg!!!

Can you find another sleep agent besides an anti-p or do you really need it (like I still sometimes do)?

Hi, I got this suggestion from the board a while back. I take either Unisom sleeping gels to help me sleep, or I will take 2 Tylenol sinus/allergy caplets.
Both have 50mg of DIPHENHYDRAMINE HCI~an antihistamine that causes drowsiness in some (like me) and I don't wake up with a 'hangover' feeling groggy from it.
Just a thought...........

I have taken 25 mg Seroquel at bedtime for over two years without any problems. And believe me, I am a serious insomniac. 2.5 mg Zyprexa is also effective. It takes 2-3 hours to kick in, but it gives you a deeper, more restful sleep than Seroquel.
