Why would I have Bruxism w/ Lithium add on?

Posted by fluffy on September 13, 2003, at 14:43:35

I am BP II. I have been on Lamictal 200mg for 7 months or so. I started hitting some turbulence in my moods, so my doc and I decided to add a bit of Lithium to my mix. I'm only taking 600mg, but I've been clenching my teeth like mad (almost like the time I went on Zoloft!). Why would Lithium cause this reaction? Also--I went pretty hypomanic shortly after we added the Li on. Seems like Li should have a calming effect--not the opposite!! What's up with my broken brain?

Thanks for any educated guesses.

Katy

I am less manic on Celexa alone, than I am with Celexa and lithium. Lithium is a very selfish drug in my oppinion, it doesn't mix well with other drugs. Lithium can enhance the serotogenic effect of many antidepressants, (not sure about lamictal)

Hi Linkadge--

Thanks so much for your post. It's weird, b/c I immediately became manicky and mentally confused. (basically, running around like a chicken w/ my head cut off). Now I just feel like I have the personality of a rock.

I'm BPII--I can't take AD's alone, or I get mixed/manic. My doc was not too pleased about the manic reaction and/or the teeth clenching. He wanted to switch me right away to something else (zyprexa, trileptal, depakote) to combat the recent turbulence.

I'm really confused as to what to do.
Thanks,
katy

Were you at all panicy ?

Did you have sudden temperature changes, or heart palpatitions?. If so you may have had serotonin syndrome. Otherwise it was probably a manic raction.

Hi Linkadge--

No heart palpitations--kind of a trembly feeling inside my body--like when you can feel your heart beating harder after a hefty night of drinking. I wasn't panicky (in a fearful way). But I was feeling frenetic and confused. Also--my teeth were really clenched and my jaw was hurting. All this has subsided except my mouth is still a little tense, and I still can't sleep.

Is there any hard evidence that Li can do this to someone? Or is it a rare reaction?

Thanks,

Katy

It could have been borderline serotonin syndrome.

It could have also been mania.

Lithium can greatly enhance the effects of various antidepressants. For me at least, adding it to Celexa makes me very irritable and manic.
