I'm frustrated and would welcome anyone's input. I was initially taking 75mg of Effexor XR, which left me with insomnia and some weight gain (Aat times I'd have nervous energy and eat as a response). Anyway, it worked very well for my depression, but didn't do enough for my anxiety. I no longer had all out panic attacks, but was still extremely self-conscious in social situations. Whether it was saying "hello" to someone passing me on the street, facing a cashier, or answering a question at work, the anxiousness continued. I'd worry as I was speaking and in most cases would get hyper, talk very rapidly, and not be able to stop. So I decided to try something else. My doctor suggested Lexapro, which I tried for a total of two days. First the good: I've never been so calm. I felt like Eyeore (sp?) from Winnie the Pooh. I even made it a point to talk to someone, something I would never do. However I was too calm. I still had panic attacks, but it was strange. Even though my mind was panicing, my body wasn't responding. I also had a slew of bad side effects...slept forever, muscle pain, twitches, etc. Even though I was told by my doctor to tough it out, I just can't bring myself to do it. So now I think I've tried every SSRI except Paxil and Luvox. Has anyone had experience with Paxil? Is there always weight gain (I really can't afford to gain anymore)? Approximately how much weight? Are there any people on this board who haven't experienced sexual side effects? If you miss a dose do you start to experience withdrawl (that happened to me on Effexor XR)? I'm just trying to get a feel for the drug. I know everyone's chemistry is different, but it seems that some of the SE's I mentioned are a given. Thanks in advance for any help.

I took Paxil for about 8 months.Although it worked really well for me,I didn't like the side effects.I put on 15lbs, and would have diarreah most of the time, and the withdrawal from coming off the drug was aweful, which is why I'll never go back on it.Everyone I know who has taken it always put on weight and experienced a decrease in sex drive.

yeah i had the same experience... (effexor better for depression, celexa not bad for anxiety)

yeah i had similar problems ... SSRIs helped, but i had to use benzos as well.... it's great if you can overcome your problem on SSRIs alone :)

yeah the sleeping problem is really bad for me on celexa too .. but maybe that's just depression?

i had a decreased libido.... which is the main reason i quit taking it... though i am starting to think celexa is even worse :(

i guess the question everyone wants answered is... what is the best SSRI? or which one has the side effects that I can deal with?
i thought celexa was supposed to be better for libido (paxil is actually used to treat premature you know what) but that doesn't seem to be the case
arrrg if only we had the time to try all of them, luvox, zoloft, prozac,

I didn't gain any weight during those 6 months.

One is posting back to ya right now ;)

I don't believe I missed a dose but if I did I remember not one experience bad or good because of it, and when I got off of Paxil it was easy....no problem, now for EFFEXOR~totally different and painful story!
Hope this helped:-)

When I took Celexa, and I'm a woman, my libido stayed the same, it actually increased, maybe partly due to the guy I was dating at the time too. lol
I've had the 'time' so to speak to try 2 out of the 3 meds you named~Prozac and Luvox.
Have any questions, feel free to ask:-)

Lexapro, which I'm on now~can't tell a difference.
Zoloft is the only SSRI I have never tried, I think for 1 day, then got changed to something else.

one more thing...i think that it's strange that some people gain and others lose on the effexor--i have lost about 15 pounds on it--i have no appetite whatsoever. i guess it's all about finding out what is right for you. the dreams that i have on effexor are definitely very vivid though--i look forward to going to bed b/c i know how interesting they always are. hope that this helped at all??

There were a few things that made me stop taking Effexor. First, I have a tendency to go off a med once I've been feeling normal for a while. Cold turkey withdrawl was absolutely horrible. I usually just spontaneously decide to go off and that's it. The Effexor enabled me to more clearly see the anxiety I was experiencing and everything else that went with it since my depression and mood swing were finally taken care of. I avoided talking to people and noticed myself getting more excited and worked up when it did happen. I was (and still am) shy, meek, and seemingly very quiet...until I open my mouth. Then whomever I'm speaking to gets a glimpse of the whirlwind within lol. It was a nightmare when I had to account for something at work. I was very capable, but I noticed that my bosses tended to equate hyper, rapid speech and animated gestures with stupidity. I never really noticed how much my anxiety affected things. I also experienced withdrawl symptoms if I missed one dose. All that coupled with the fact that my doctor refuses to prescribe benzos (at least until I've exhausted all antidepressants) and I'm a "grass is always greener" kind of person, made me want to check if something better might be out there. I also feel that Effexor increased my social anxiety. And despite the fact that I've been off it since the end of April, that same high level of anxiety has persisted. Unfortunately, without an antidepressant it's also accompained my mood swings, low boiling point/frustration level, and all out panic attacks, etc.
Regarding weight gain, for me, it's stupid because I'm not hungry. Sometimes I just have nervous energy and end up eating to make me feel...I don't know...slower, more calm. I'm not sure exactly. Mostly though I gained weight on Prozac and was never able to lose it while on Effexor. It is strange though because I lost weight on the non XR version, but can't go back to that. It's too hard on my system. I switched from Prozac to Effexor because though the Prozac worked, it made me feel ditzy-happy, and for whatever reason, the Effexor gave me a mental boost. I have ADD too, so maybe that has something to do with it. I also have tried to go back on Prozac (for a week and a half), and couldn't for some reason. I had to pee every five minutes, was very jittery, and had massive panic attacks. One would come on and I'd feel sick to my stomach and throwing up was the only thing that calmed me down.
I also had some VERY vivid dreams while on Effexor. They were scary, but made for some cool short stories since I have no imagination to speak of. =)
I tried Zoloft once, literally. I yawned all day, which is fine, but I experienced really severe jaw pain and tightening. That was enough to put me off. Nausea, fine. Some insomnia, fine, but that was too much. It hurt like hell.
I tried Lexapro twice, but as I've mentioned on other posts, it was four days of bad, bad things. I slept for a day and a half straight, had muscle aches, a fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, always had to pooh, and got a hungry feeling about 1/2 hr after I'd snack or eat a meal. I just had too many side effects to be able to stick it out.
With Wellbutrin, I literally had to pass out in order to sleep. It also made me really mean. I was more easily agitated and more agitated in general, so that was the end for Wellbutrin.
Personally, I just want to take Effexor and a benzo, but my doctor won't have it, and it's driving me crazy. So, my only option now seems to be to try Paxil or Luvox, the only two I haven't taken yet. I just don't know what to do. I switch between wanting to go back to the way it was...shutting up and going back to Effexor and hoping/searching for something that will work better. I just don't want to get caught up in some kind of quest for a cure-all, because that's not going to happen. It's not realistic. I just want to strike a nice balance...reduced symptoms and side effects I can deal with (some freak me out and are way more bothersome than others). However at this point, I just want to give up because it's so frustrating.
Ok, this was really long, and I didn't mean it to be. I commend anyone who actually read the whole thing lol. I also just want to say that I love this group. Thank you so much for responding...to me, to others. It's just great. People here seem to really care, really listen. Because of this, I don't feel alone.

I can relate to you. Whenever it seems I have something that is working, I drop it, or I start looking for something else. I know afterwards that it was working well, but when I am on it I always wonder if it is possible to get rid of this or that side effect.
I do like Celexa, but the insomnia is really killing me. I do feel justified in looking for something else, because I know what better is like, you'd think you theoretically could have better without the side effects.

I have tried two SSRI's Paxil and Celexa.
All Paxil did was making me drowsy.
Celexa was a little different from Paxil.
Celexa even changed my characteristics...which I really really hated.I was kind of sharp guy, but Celexa made me mild.
It also gave me stomach pain and weight gain (oh, Paxil made me gain weight too)Now, I don't take Celexa anymore, and I'm back to normal though I still experience withdrawal effects (it's been only a week since I completely tapperd off Celexa).
So, I really hated those two drugs I have tried. I don't think SSRI's are right med for me.
Well...it could be just me.
After a few weeks, I'll try Nardil, an MAOI.

Paxil worked great for me and I thought "someting else" would be better as far as activating. Since then I've tried Lex, Luvox and Prozac which have done nothing for anxiety except maybe just being flat and not caring. On Paxil I wanted to cook and have people over etc. Since quitting I've felt more non caring which can be good in relationship issues but I was much more wanting to do things on Paxil. I'm currently taking 150mg of Wellbutrin SR and thinking about asking my pdoc about adding 5mg of Lex or 20mg of Paxil. Any comments?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I would love to get to a point where I actually want people to come over, want to be in a group without feeling overwhelmingly self-conscious. I was more likely to go out and do things while on Effexor, but my anxiety persisted. I need something more calming than Effexor, but less calming than Lexapro. =) Was the hope of finding something better the only reason you left Paxil or just the main reason?

Since then I've tried Lex, Luvox and Prozac which have done nothing for anxiety except maybe just being flat and not caring. On Paxil I wanted to cook and have people over etc. Since quitting I've felt more non caring which can be good in relationship issues but I was much more wanting to do things on Paxil. I'm currently taking 150mg of Wellbutrin SR and thinking about asking my pdoc about adding 5mg of Lex or 20mg of Paxil. Any comments?

That was really it. I will say that when I took 20mg regular Paxil I was fine and when the doc switched me to CR I don't know if there were different fillers, coatings etc. on the CR but about four hours after taking it I would get a burning sensation like a diarrhea attack for about an hour. This was with the 25mg and the 12.5mg. With regular 20mg Paxil if anything I was a little constipated! I've never posted this but I would be curious if anyone else had this problem with the CR vs regular Paxil.
This is the end of the thread.
