Anyone still on this combo? If so, how's it working and how is it different than taking just one or the other? Many Thanks!

In reply to Lamictal/topamax combo-anyone?, posted by jaby on September 10, 2003, at 11:07:24
Hi, I was on this combo for a while, moreso just the Topamax. I found after 3 months that the only thing the Topamax really did for me was supress my appetite and I was able to lose a little weight, but I've gained some back. When I began Lamictal s l o w l y about a month ago and the other day my psychiatrist increased it and discontinued the Topamax, I'm finding I am already sleeping better at night. It seems Lamictal works better for me in terms of depression. Topamax did nothing for that.
This is just my experience.
Take care.

I have been on lamictal for a couple of years. Working. I like it. 600mg/day. I added topomax earlier this year when went into a slump. It did nothing for me. I was just throwing money down the drain taking that. The replacement is Zonegran, which is wonderful! I am feeling, dare I say, normal. My tendency is to be more depressed than manic. Lamictal really helps.

Hi, can I ask how Zonegran helped you? I take it it's used for bipolar? Did you have any side effects? Is it available in the US? I don't know where you are, I haven't heard of it here. Topamax is a joke, in my opinion, I realized that, it was like eating candy, only reason I would go back on it would be to lose 25 more pounds. I'll try a search on Zonegran too (sp?) but interested in your experience.
Hope to hear back.

I am in the US and I am Bi-Polar. Studies for bipolar use using Zonegran are only in Japan(I believe but definitely not US). Only research in US on Zonegran is by Duke University. They approved it as a weight loss drug! I am resistant to medication so I get to try new and experimental stuff.
As a weight loss drug and what it did for me....I was a nocturnal, compulsive feeder. Very active however. I mountain bike(actually in the mountains), hike, etc., etc...I just kept 20 extra pounds on because of the night-time eating. I drop 20 lbs in 6 weeks. Absolutely no appetite. Not to the point of danger. Those that do not need to lose weight do not lose weight when taking Zonegran. This was not the reason for me to take this drug, just a bonus.
As for my head and the reason it was prescribed...I have anxiety and panic attacks and have had some depression through the winter. Remeron was no longer working. Tried Topomax and that did not work. Zonegran lifted me out of the depression with a very quick and smooth transition. Did not do much for the anxiety. As another experiment we added Strattera, used for ADD, and that really helped. One of the risks for me when taking an anti-depressant is pushing me over the edge into a mania. It is usually clear within weeks what the med will do to me. I am going on two months and no neg reactions.
This is the first medication that has had zero negative side effects. It is the only one that has had positive physical side efffects.
A Disclaimer: I did have absolutely no sex drive for about 4 to 5 weeks. It was ok with me since I needed to be better. In my current social situation is was not a draw back. Hee Hee. Therefore to me it was not a negative side effect.
I like it. What are you thinking?
