Anyone had a *loss of effect* with Strattera?

Posted by lois on September 7, 2003, at 13:09:11

I started Strattera about 3-4 months ago and went up on the dose slowly. Noticed results, in a week, with each dose increase. This response went away in about a week each time. Finally up to 120 mgs,(as high as we want to go), and have *some* relief today-the first day. Now we'll try 120/110mgs every other day to try to keep it from pooping out.
FYI: also on 2 ssri's lamictal, topomax, small dose clonipin, and small dose seroquel for sleep.
Can't tolerate Wellbutrin, but I need the Norepinephrine, or energy/motivation, somehow.
Any encouragement would be appreciated.
Thx.
Lois

I'm actually taking a small amount of Strattera (20mg/day) and a small amount of Welbutrin. I'm interested in knowing why you couldn't tolerate the Welbutrin?

Keep us posted on the Strattera.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Lois.

Are you taking Strattera for depression or ADD?

Mostly depression part [of my bipolar(II), I think]; but I am able to concentrate and read a *lot* better on this. I am told I have a mild form of ADD, but I made it through school-a bundle full of nerves along the way. How's that for a straight answer?
FYI:
Wellbutrin made me almost homicidal!! I tried it for 3 weeks!! And the panicky (probably manic discomfort,I was told), *never* let up!! I couldn't stand it!!
Effexor was good except the side effects.
I am hoping if it is approved, duloxitine might work and be gentler.
Still hoping I won't get tolerant to Strattera. Is it possible 120/110mgs might just be my therapeutic dose? What do you think? Lois

Bob,

> Did you ever have any nervousness on the Wellbutrin? Any at all? Did your Strattera poop out? Or why did you add the Wellbutrin? How much Wellbutrin are you on? See my other post about my Wellbutrin experience. I never got over the "hump" as they say, no matter what dose I was on. I tried to take it and stay on it for 2 different trials.
I might suggest Wellbutrin Add-on if Strattera poops out for the final time. Unless anyone else knows another adjunct for Strattera, or to add on to a lower dose of Strattera.
Thx,
Lois

Lois:

I have experienced nervousness on many meds, and am very sensitive - Welbutrin is no exception. I am taking very small amounts of it - only 50mg a day. I figured I would add it to the Strattera as my girlfriend was becoming increasingly unhappy that my genitals had been reduced to shriveled lumps of dead flesh on these meds. I also needed more energy. I have a little more energy now, but the sex problem is as bad as ever, and now I have this tight, constricted problem in my chest that feels like shortness of breath. It's not pleasant, and may spell the end of these meds for me. If it ain't one thing, it's another.

I had a loss of effect with Straterra by the three month at 80 mg. I'm at close to four months at 100 mg.and have not lost any effect. (I haven't been able to get past the sedation effect at this level, though. It only took about six weeks for that to pass at 80 mg.)

That nervousness and tightness in the chest sounds like anxiety. Straterra has profoundly reduced that feeling for me. It sounds like you are getting the opposite effect, unless it's something else is causing that. Is that the Wellbutrin?

I couldn't take Wellbutrin because I was allergic to it. I've been looking for an alternative. Wellbutrin works on norepinephrine and dopamine. I saw this post on this board recently:

"You may want to try Sanorex (mazindol) for weight loss... it's a norepinephrine/dopamine reuptake inhibitor, schedule IV controlled substance."

I haven't researched it yet, but that sounds just like Wellbutrin. I thought Wellbutrin was in a class of its own and didn't think I'd find that combination without adding stimulants to Straterra which my psychiatrist is not wont to do.

Maybe you can try that as an alternative. I don't think it's a diet drug, just that it could help…but I don't know yet. I'll post something here if I find some good information about the drug.

This is the end of the thread.
